Remedy - The pride of Finnish AAA games (Part 2)

If the announcement of the one-million sale comes today, it will mean a clear correction in the share price. The reality will likely just meet forecasts or fall below them, keeping the stock at these levels. We probably won’t hear anything about this before the interim report.

Your point is completely valid.

However, those immediate sales rankings right after launch depend on the game’s launch momentum. Games that sell well at launch also sell well during the first few weeks. Extreme exceptions include super-viral games like Clair Obscur, which manage to accelerate sales post-launch, and at the other extreme, a big IP game with poor player and critic reviews, where only the core fanbase is enough for Day 1 purchases, but no one else cares. E.g., Silent Hill Townfall, which is currently selling worse (#253) than the original Control (#250) on sale. This, too, is of course an unfair comparison.

We need peer comparisons to properly examine sales ranking trends. The data for this exists, but I don’t have it on my phone. Right now, though, it seems the sales trend won’t reach the year’s best-selling games, but it’s not entirely front-loaded either. My gut feeling is that the sales decay trend is somewhere around an average story-driven AAA performance, or slightly better. Maybe I’ll return to this later once I’ve dug into the data.

This competitive window is exceptionally tough for asking full price for a AAA game. Steam probably set an all-time sales record for September.

I would also like to remind everyone that even if Remedy doesn’t announce 1M copies sold, it doesn’t mean that this sales milestone hasn’t been exceeded. Based on various data points, the forum has likely already narrowed it down pretty well to around 900k - 1M copies sold. I don’t believe the reality deviates much from this.

I wrote about this earlier and criticized how simple things that don’t even cost anything have been left out of marketing. Because of this, I still personally consider it most likely that we won’t hear about sales figures until the Q3 report. Below are the quotes with the reasoning.

The median for all games is around 0.15 for month 1. For better/larger games, it’s 0.25-0.35. I have several previous posts about this from earlier this year if you want to scroll back. These exclude outliers that take off on a viral organic trend.

Gears of War: E-Day has received pretty strong scores on Metacritic. Currently at 87, sat at 89 for a long time, but now it’s gotten 2 mixed reviews. Whether Gears is the kind of game that could make it as a GotY contender, probably not, but it could capture Xbox players’ attention for a couple of weeks.

Selling a million copies would definitely be a good milestone to flag ASAP once it hits that mark.

At least I got the impression from that interview that announcing the sales figures will be used for marketing when sales slow down and the timing is right.
Steam sales estimates on Gamalytic: Copies sold: 297.3K (220.1K - 374.5K) and Owners: 372.9K.
PSNProfiles shows 5,693 Game Owners, and ps-store-db.live for the first 7 days looks so evenly matched that it would be quite strange if, together with the physical copies coming on the 15th, it wouldn’t at least reach one million, if it hasn’t already or even earlier. The other two games in the comparison reached that million milestone very quickly, after all.

For an investor, announcing these milestones would certainly be sweet, but at the same time, the potential sales boost from announcing it at the right moment would be lost “if that’s what this is about.”

Edit: At least the game is hardly going on sale anytime soon “hopefully,” given that the physical editions haven’t been delivered yet; such a move would probably only fuel more resentment over the late delivery of those physical copies.

  • Mortismal gaming: ”buy” recommendation
  • Moist critical: top 3 game of 2026
  • Among the big streamers, Cohh Carnage and Maximilian Dood are doing full playthroughs of the game

A lot of people are currently in the middle of Onimusha / Dawnwalker / other games, and Control Resonant is right there in the pipeline on their buy list

The release of physical copies will create another boost for marketing and visibility when a new wave of players talks about the game on social media

Probably need another Kauppalehti article to give the stock price some support

Is Remedy going to skip announcing that first million altogether here?

If they were to announce reaching one million sales in the next few days (if and when that milestone is broken shortly), the announcement (and its financial impact) could be completely overshadowed by the Autumn Sale, at least on Steam.

On October 15, physical copies can then be added to the tally, and they could announce selling, say, 1.4 million copies all at once. By that point, the Steam sales will also be over and the news cycle quiet enough for the announcement to get better traction in the gaming media and among players.

If Remedy feels the game is performing well enough relative to their expectations, we might have to wait a while before seeing any discounts.
As for announcements, Steam sale events are likely a much better driver of sales than simply announcing that they’ve crossed the one- or two-million mark right now; from that perspective, utilizing it later could easily be seen as more beneficial.
Of course, all of this is just speculation since we don’t have better data. Total sales across Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox without physical copies and NVIDIA bundles could hardly reach two million anyway, so I suppose we’re still just guessing whether it’s currently at one million that simply hasn’t been announced yet, or not.
P.S. It’s pretty wild that player reviews are sitting at 90.4% positive with a large number of reviews, yet this is still the situation. It’ll be interesting to see how much of an impact on player numbers we’ll see once the physical edition is finally released!

If you want to use a sales milestone for game marketing rather than just investor relations, then “1M in 1-10 days” is communicatively far, far better than something like “1.2M in 3 weeks.”

In an ideal scenario, you first hit 1M digital sell-through as quickly as possible, and then later in the year, before the key sales season/Black Friday, 1.3–1.5M copies sold including physical sell-in.

With this kind of messaging, players would understand that the game is selling well at launch and also has a long tail → you might as well buy the game now, because you’ll be waiting years for deep discounts.

Then again, since this is Remedy, I’m not holding my breath for these milestones. Historically, and still today, investor matters have been at the very bottom of their priority list, and disclosing wishlist benchmarks wasn’t leveraged to market the game at all, aside from a single 2M social media post.

In business, I’ve been taught that you communicate whenever there’s something to communicate. Remedy gains nothing from holding back milestone announcements because of a Steam sale. People still buy new games regardless of sales, because there’s always a discount campaign going on somewhere.

Control is also consistently played by a pretty good number of players who might then transition to Resonant, either by having purchased both games together or by acquiring the game separately

Resonant’s player count is also higher at its weakest point of the day than Control was at its peak a little over six years ago; Control sold 2M copies in 15 months

And this, in my opinion, is the angle that marketing has been lacking: activating people’s herd behavior and, through that, the urge to play now while everyone else is playing and while it’s trending. Many are certainly waiting for discounts to pick it up later instead.

MoistCrItiKaL posted a video about Resonant on his main channel, where videos typically get several million views. Big deal, he definitely doesn’t do this for every game he plays through.

Even if the conversion rate is well below one percent, this would result in several thousand copies sold.

Regarding this video, I was keeping an eye on Steam’s US Top Sellers list yesterday. Resonant was at rank 40 after the video came out. Before I went to sleep, Resonant had climbed to rank 16 – pretty solid growth during the Steam Autumn Sale & US peak gaming hours. Still tough to estimate how many copies sold would account for a jump from 40 to 16. And of course, not all the sales can be attributed to a single video.

It’s good to remember with these major seasonal Steam sales that Steam’s overall transaction volume—both in terms of unit sales and dollars—temporarily surges significantly compared to baseline levels, likely manifold.

Resonant’s daily sales won’t necessarily drop significantly, even if its global top-seller ranking drops from 25 to 50.

It does. There’s already plenty of communication regarding other matters, so it doesn’t make sense to push everything out all at once. I believe that if they announce any numbers, it’ll be done as first-month sales.

I don’t know if this is the reason why such a boring and non-committal guidance was given for this year: “Revenue and EBIT will grow from the previous year.” That guidance holds up even in the event of a total flop. Since no sales volume affects the guidance, it seems no sales figure qualifies as inside information, meaning they don’t have to stress at all about needing to make any external announcements.

Now we are in the second phase of marketing, where the goal is to convince gamers who are already aware of the game and considering a purchase through validation and “social proof.” That accolades trailer falls right into that category, as the hard-core fans have already bought the game in the first week. But let’s wait and see. One million purely digital copies is an extremely difficult and solid achievement for many AAA games. Surely during this second weekend at least around 50k copies will be sold.

On Gamalytic, the owner count is now at 433.5K. Sales rankings have held up relatively well on the PlayStation side, too. By all reasonable logic, hitting that 1M mark should happen any moment now. That really is a solid performance in this market with digital-only copies. Earlier this year, another domestic title, Saros, was a very high-quality game, but rumors suggest its sales fizzled out at only around 300k during the first few weeks. In this sense, I think the budget for the new Resonant is sensibly kept moderate, especially when compared to Alan Wake 2. In my view, it makes no sense for a company like Remedy to take on any larger projects.

The market is indeed tough, and the competition specifically for consumers’ time is fierce. I’d love to buy that AC8 myself, but I’ll probably still be busy finishing Control for another week. By the way, there’s even a live-action miniseries for AC: ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE | Live-Action HOUR ZERO | Bandai Namco Europe The big publishers clearly have the muscle to put into this kind of marketing.
