But since the reductions are funded by removing the transfer tax exemption for first-time homebuyers, the outcome is unlikely to stimulate the market. It will likely be the opposite.

• The transfer tax rate for real estate will decrease from 4 percent to 3 percent.
• The transfer tax rate for shares in housing and real estate companies will decrease from 2 percent to 1.5 percent.

“The law is intended to come into force at the turn of the year, but the tax rates will apply retroactively to transfers made on or after the date of the government proposal, October 12, 2023. The Tax Administration will provide practical instructions on its website regarding the matter. The Tax Administration will refund overpaid transfer tax with interest to those customers who make transactions during the end of 2023 and pay the tax according to the current regulations.”

Why can’t we get rid of this ridiculous law in this country? Tax capital gains, dammit. It can’t be this difficult.
