Inlägg från Wiser Asia: China just made fundus screening a national target. On Sep 7, China NHS other authorities issued the 2026–2030 Eye Health Work Plan. Its core shift is blunt: from treating disease to managing health.

For the first time, China will build a fundus screening coverage indicator for diabetic retinopathy. Township health centers and community health service centers are now encouraged to offer fundus photography. Village clinics take on vision checks and eye-health education. A recommendation becomes a measured target. Measured targets get funded.

Start with diabetes. China has 233 million diabetic patients, nearly half never been tested. About 1/3 develops diabetic retinopathy, which is now the leading cause of blindness among working-age adults.

Then myopia. 50%+ of China’s children (<18 years) are nearsighted. More than 70 million people have high myopia, and over 30% of them will develop fundus disease. Retinal detachment. Macular damage. These are not corrected by glasses.

Two large populations. One conclusion. eye-screening has to move to where people already are, and it has to keep happening.

China has 1.05 million primary healthcare institutions. 560,000 village clinics. Primary care handles over half of all patient visits. 90% of residents reach a clinic within 15 minutes. That installed base is the market. Not the top-tier hospitals. The last mile.

In 2026-March, China authorities added 12 AI-assisted diagnostic items to the reimbursement list. AI-assisted Diabetic retinopathy diagnosis is one of them. The next step is to ensure Reimbursement reach all primary care sites in coming years.

Yet the hard part is not the solution. It is who operates the camera, who reads the image, who owns the follow-up. Portable AI screening exists because that arithmetic closes no other way.

This is also what why WISER ASIA created the JV with Optomed Plc. We have spent a-year on this question, working with hospitals and community partners to push fundus screening into primary care. That work and this policy point the same direction.

WISER was built by people who spent decades connecting Europe and Asia. When a Nordic medtech looks at China, they should not have to choose between a distributor and a decade of guesswork. We do the local operating work, so the technology gets a fair test in a market this size.
