That’s where the idea came from. Why couldn’t there be a separate feel-good thread on the forum, which one could always open with peace of mind, and be sure that the gloom of the news or the world wouldn’t creep into one’s mind again and weigh down one’s mood. The media is full of unpleasant, distressing, and frightening news, so let this thread be a counterbalance to all negativity.
It is therefore appropriate - even desirable - to share all kinds of joyful news from the stock market or the world, whether it’s a positive earnings warning, happy life events in one’s own life, or encouraging news from around the world. The only restriction is that politics does not belong in this thread, and there is already a separate thread for hyping up stock prices.
I was thinking myself that a thread like this really should be made, even though the suggestion was originally half-joking, but it’s good that I didn’t even have to bother
In my book, this falls under feel-good news, and it’s still quite recent:
A new type of nuclear reactor was built in China that cools down passively. They even demoed this by shutting down the systems while the reaction was active, and it cooled down exactly as it was supposed to. So, whereas in more traditional reactors a major accident is possible because they require active cooling—meaning that if the cooling system fails, the temperature rises uncontrollably. Of course, even in these, a major accident is nowadays prevented by the bottom of the reactor being made of a material that melts at a relatively low temperature, with a vessel underneath where the melted fuel ends up and spreads enough to start cooling. But in this reactor type built in China, things don’t even get that far.
I didn’t get wet on my bike commute this morning, even though the rain radar was threatening with an approaching shower front. I also just had some tasty sausage gravy for lunch, oh man..!
Pienistäkin päivittäisistä asioista saa jo hyvän mielen. Mainio ketju, hienoa kun avasit @Tomi_Valkeajarvi.
My own imagination is really starting to run wild thinking about all the cool things I could build one day when I retire. maybe not exactly a treehouse, but all kinds of DIY projects are just the best. Most recently, during the Christmas break, I built a six-person plank table for our living room and a two-meter-wide TV stand for our new apartment. I ended up saving a pretty penny too, since I didn’t have to carry my money to furniture stores.
In any case, you have to appreciate and admire how this person has fulfilled their dream and turned a treehouse into a practical workspace where they can clear their head.
I heard from my better half at home today that the fast fashion trend on TikTok has finally started to fade and is being replaced by a trend spreading under the term “underconsumption,” where, as the name suggests, people avoid buying anything unnecessary, are content with what they have, and prefer second-hand when needed.
I had to Google whether any articles had already been written on the subject, and it seems several have appeared within the past week. This NY Times story is from five days ago, and here are a few quotes that at least put me in a better mood and restored a bit of faith in humanity.
“I’ve been really excited to see this trending lately, because it’s a good approach to showing that overconsumption isn’t the norm for most people,” Ms. Wiebe said in an interview. Underconsumption, she said, “rejects the influencer culture and also the companies behind the influencers who are always trying to get us to buy more and consume more.”
“I think people are just enjoying a slower-paced life, and they’re not looking for stuff to fulfill them, in a way. They’re being more creative.”
It’s nice to write in this thread on a rainy and blood-red Monday to maintain a more positive perspective. Just a reminder that losses aren’t losses until you realize them, and when prices drop, you get to buy good stocks at cheaper levels. We’re playing the long game here, after all. I’m sure even the members of the dividend crowd won’t mind this! #staypositive
And as another positive note, you can enjoy the excitement of Olympic sports constantly :
In the Nvidia thread, this podcast about AI and its future was recommended, and at 33:08, they also touched on a theme that I thought would fit here as well.
Gavin Baker believes that within our lifetime, we will be able to produce all necessary energy with solar panels as their efficiencies improve quite significantly.
Baker states: ”It’s little bit sad that all these kids are really worried about global warming and they are thinking that ’I don’t want to bring children to this warming world.’ Global warming isn’t a big problem - it’s a solved problem. And it is solved because photovoltaic cell efficiency is compouding just under 10% a year and battery efficiency is compounding less than that. And if you compound that out, over the long term - you don’t even need a long term - the world is going to run on sunlight directly. Fossil fuels are just going to go away. It’s because of economics. It’s because sunlight storage is going to be cheaper than every other way of providing power. It’s just not going to be a problem for next generation now. Emmisions are going to collapse in my lifetime. Literally collapse. And that’s an awesome and encouraging though and I wish somebody was shouting that from the rooftop.”
@Pappa_Tunturi deserves at least the Fax Master of the Year award for these Fortum updates. I appreciate you taking the time to refill the ink and paper in the Fortum fax and posting the results for everyone to see.
@Sijoittaja-alokas already shared this video in the Inderes thread, but I thought it would be a good fit here as well. At least I felt good while filming this video, and I am happy for @Kaisa_Vanha-Perttula for landing her dream job as an analyst.

My workplace location moved closer to me. From now on, I’ll be strolling to work, about 20 minutes each way, and the euros saved from driving can be blown on Helsinki (Hesuli) "cod" and "storms", so there won’t really be any savings at all.....
Well, maybe my fitness will at least improve.

Bringing this back from hibernation. Good news about bees, and in the same thread, some commentary on how the bee decline certainly made the headlines back in the day, with scares about the extinction of almost the entire species and the resulting catastrophe—yet the improvement of the situation hasn’t made the news in the same way. This highlights the necessity of this thread once again: https://x.com/GaryWinslett/status/1852509585602384060?t=4aDOFByPU5fESxPQw7qRYw&s=19
Last week, the logo of the Nivala-based company Natural Indigo Finland was featured on perhaps the world’s most famous billboard in New York’s Times Square.
