Transfer of shares from the US to Finland cost-effectively

I couldn’t find a discussion related to this topic, so I’m starting one here.

Over the years, I’ve accumulated Microsoft shares in the US with Morgan Stanley through the Stock Award Plan.

Now that this Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP) has concluded, my intention is to transfer (and specifically transfer, not sell) all the accumulated shares to Finland, for example, to Nordnet, where I already have an Investment Savings Account (OST).

Could you give me some tips on how to handle this “sensibly” and whether it’s even possible “without tax consequences”? And, of course, this transfer should be done as cost-effectively and tax-efficiently as possible.

You can only transfer money to an OST, so you can’t transfer shares there, at least. @Johannes_Sippola, would this question belong in a broker discussion, for example?

Yep yep. However, there are already Ask & Answer -thread about investing and Discussion about brokers threads, so couldn’t this have found its place in some existing thread? And you already asked this question in Sijoitustieto, didn’t you get an answer there? Nordnet’s customer service was also invented, where they professionally answer these general and technical questions. Do we need to bother the forum folks with these kinds of questions by opening a whole thread?

“I couldn’t find a discussion related to this topic, so I’m starting one here.” Oh well, this isn’t a discussion topic, but an individual question that can be asked in an existing thread. Not approved.

I have been following Inderes in many different forms for years, and now, exceptionally, I asked about something I feel is very important to me (I believe it was my second post ever on this forum).

I am sorry for the mistake I made and I apologize for you feeling it was such a serious matter. Even as bullying of forum members.

It would probably be desirable to have the entire thread I started removed, and I will make sure in the future that I do not write or ask anything on this forum.

I am certainly disappointed, but I can endure the consequences of my self-inflicted blunders.

You could start from here:

Indeed, you cannot transfer shares to an OST (Osakesäästötili - Share Savings Account), so you will also need an AOT (Arvopaperisäilytystili - Securities Account). Fees may arise at both banks, but likely less than selling and repurchasing. However, the fact that the shares are in the US might become a problem.

Perhaps a bit of an exaggerated response to the thread starter. The question doesn’t necessarily need its own thread, but there’s no need to demean others in that way; rather, guide them to the right place.

I would approach the bank/broker to whom I would be transferring the shares and ask them how it’s done. You could even ask a few different banks to get a better understanding of the process.

Inderes has been a friendly and professional forum. Let’s keep it that way and welcome even the quieter discussants!

Yeah, well, apologies, maybe I was a bit too aggressive. It just annoyed me when the same question from the same person pops up as a new thread on different forums  I just thought, what if everyone did the same thing, i.e. started a new thread for every little question. It would be chaos. I could have expressed this more kindly, of course. But yeah, it’s not a serious issue…

Let’s continue in the ask thread, closing this.
