Damn it, it’s frustrating how we’ve never really understood to invest in prevention. The fitness sector alone is the poorest of all sectors, yet increasing physical activity would save billions in healthcare costs for certain diseases. Only a ridiculously small fraction of those who apply receive the highest tier of informal care allowance (which you can barely live on). Then an elderly person, who would otherwise cope at home with a family member’s help, ends up in a care facility where it costs 10x more in tax money
and of course, insurances often lapse just when your memory starts fading the next morning.
This was just an insider’s bitching about Finland, but fortunately we have huge markets for this elsewhere
On the other hand, the finances of the wellbeing services counties (hyvinvointialueet) are being squeezed so thoroughly that maybe prevention will slowly start to become of interest.
