Bittium. What thoughts?

Hi,

I looked at Bittium’s results today and wondered if this could be my next investment? Thanks to Inderes for the good video. I still need to read the analysis, but before that, I’d like to ask what I should pay attention to when getting to know this company. Is this also one of those technology companies that needs to grow and not make a profit yet?

I might be wrong, but I’ve understood that the company is quite risky. It invests heavily in product development, which impacts profitability. However, there’s no certainty that these new products will sell well. Bittium is also heavily dependent on individual large deliveries, which carry a risk of failure. A speculative stock…

Addition: it does business with the state, so the risk of state bureaucracy is present…

This company somehow reminds me of Benefon  I wouldn’t touch it myself

Yes, it differs quite a lot from Benefon. You should read a bit about the company’s operations before writing such assumptions. The cash balance is approximately €3.00/share, which already differs wildly from Benefon, which lived purely on debt.

Strong signs of a turnaround company.

2018 2H had as much profit as 2017 2H had loss. 2018 was profitable overall. And they predict growing revenue and profit in 2019. Large defense project frameworks in Finland and Austria, which will generate revenue over several years, and customers won’t disappear anytime soon. Pilot in Spain. Expansion into Germany.

By the way, @g3235286 operates in a completely different segment than Benefon or Nokia’s mobile phones. I recommend the same as @Saasanoa above.

Nalle also brings to mind a commie.

Bittium’s stock is up 5.82% today. As an owner, it makes me smile, but I can’t figure out why it suddenly jumped so much? I haven’t found anything in the news, at least.

I don’t know if there’s any new news about Bittium. It’s worth reading this. You can’t share this link too much =) Miksi osakkeet laskevat tai nousevat? - Inderes

A “bigger” price increase (or decrease) often doesn’t need news to fuel it. Sometimes someone just happens to buy a stock for more than yesterday because at yesterday’s price, no one wants to sell the stock right now. Especially small companies fluctuate a lot on a daily basis; sometimes Admicom was even up 14% just because someone wanted to buy a little more for themselves.

with low trading volume. Enersense also had a roughly 20% price increase on one day with trades of 4 shares. That meant a value increase of about 1 million euros on a roughly 10 euro purchase, including costs, at the closing price

The half-year review came and went. The result was positive. R&D expenses are still high, and the development of SDR Tough is slightly behind schedule.

“Based on the delivery agreement signed at the beginning of 2018, Bittium continued to deliver customized ECG measuring devices to a leading US company providing remote monitoring services in the first half of the year. In addition, the company gained several new customers from Australia, Asia, and Europe.”

It was very positive that Medical is doing well.

The guidance for the rest of the year includes orders from Mexsat, so we should hear something in the form of trade releases from there.

Interesting. Preventice has received business from Europe.

“Total value of the procurement (excluding VAT)
Value excluding VAT: 1,865,574.65 GBP”

Of course, the sums are small, but relative to Medical, it’s quite a large deal. What could Bittium’s share of the total be? And could this be part of the USA deal, or are these European collaborations separate?

There was a button shop in Hilma. Hopefully we’ll get a press release about this once the appeal period expires. However, it also tells us that field radio development is progressing. Will we get mass deliveries of SDR Tough products from the defense forces by the end of the year?

“To that end, the Member States participating in the ESSOR project - Belgium, Germany, Spain, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal (with Estonia and Ireland as observers) - have moved forward to implement a common architecture analysis of software radios in Europe.”

" ..and soon Rohde & Schwarz (DE). "

So Germany is apparently joining ESSOR.

I didn’t notice anything, maybe the breach of that support level just got sellers moving. Last year’s good news is already forgotten, and new news is scarce. The most recent significant news is probably that contract with the Estonian Defence Forces. On Twitter, they’ve mainly reported on trade fair appearances. The sales director’s visit to Mexico a while ago also caught my attention; I wonder if projects have progressed there!?

Usually, these things precede something – I’m following this one, I sold my position a while ago, but it has potential to rise.

I already took a position at €6.23, I’m too lazy to go down from there  The low trading volume and news don’t give me a reason to change my view. I’ll make additional purchases between 5.5-5.7 if I feel like it.

So I’m not in any way @DayTraderXL underestimating your view, there could just as well be something negative under the surface.

Well, I haven’t noticed anything negative, at least. This year-end has been unusually quiet, and press releases from Bittium have been scarce; perhaps that’s been the biggest problem.

The CEO stated in H1 2019 that they had deliveries “in the pipeline” for Mexsat for the end of the year, but nothing has been heard about them yet, and we’re almost in November.

Edit: This is quite an interesting piece of news

“Bittium will showcase an Android Automotive in-vehicle system demo at the event, implemented with a Qualcomm chipset, which includes, among other things, a device and application management solution based on Bittium SafeMove®.”

EDIDP, the European defence industrial development programme, has moved forward.

Here’s an excerpt:

“Modular and adaptive tactical network to control, change and manage network behaviour, including cyber security”

Direct quote from the document:

"The ESSOR PESCO project activities are currently performed by the consortium a4ESSOR through a contract managed by OCCAr. A4ESSOR is a Joint-Venture between companies Thales (FR), Leonardo (IT), Indra (SP), Radmor (PL), Bittium (FI) and soon Rhode & Schwarz (DE). The objective of the ESSOR programme is to focus on interoperable (coalition) solutions for the armed forces. The two main products of this more than 10-year programme are the coalition High Dynamic Range WaveForm (HDRWF) (specifications, base waveform, ported on different target platforms, interoperability tested) and the definition of the ESSOR architecture, conceived to become the European standard. The consortium gets some full IPR attached to these products and any future activities related to other coalition waveform will need to reuse this background information. Only a4ESSOR gets this particular know-how related to the SDR architecture, called ESSOR architecture.
European competitiveness will be enhanced through the availability of several vendors in Europe to provide tactical radios encompassing some common waveforms which would ensure interoperability between armed forces of Member States.

Article 195 (f) of the Financial Regulation: ‘‘grants […] for activities with specific characteristics that require a particular type of body on account of its technical competence, its high degree of specialisation or its administrative powers, on condition that the activities concerned do not fall within the scope of a call for proposals.’’
The actions present exceptional technological characteristics: are all based on the state of the art technology in the radio field (e.g. software defined radio) and aims at developing the most advanced concepts and solutions for communication, applied to all the waveform layers. These waveforms (and related activities) cover all the radio communications needs, complementing each other. They overall build up a complete set of capabilities satisfying the most stringent, modern and future communication requirements.
The action is a strategic enabler for European defence: complete communication capabilities are critical assets; when they are accessible, shared and used by all Member States, provide for an unprecedented optimization and effectiveness of the joint operations. Management and custodianship of such products complete the overall communication assets.
The action is able to contribute to and solve a critical shortfall: so far communication interoperability has been weak; the proposed activities provide for availability and usability in a short time period.
The action contributes to the inclusiveness of EDIDP as well as to foster the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base (EDTIB) on a long term basis: through the PESCO initiative more Member States are willing to join the ESSOR framework Memorandum of Understanding increasing the opportunities to jointly use, own and maintain the final products.
The named beneficiaries, on account of their technical competence and high degree of specialization, are well placed to perform the above mentioned activities.
Article 195 (c) of the Financial Regulation: ‘‘grants to bodies with a de jure or de facto monopoly or to bodies designated by Member States, under their responsibility, where those Member States are in a de jure or de facto monopoly situation’’.
The current project nations designated the named beneficiaries, under their responsibility, to develop ESSOR. There is no other European project known of this type and magnitude within the timeframe above and that has achieved that level of maturity in the Union. Therefore there is a monopoly situation.
Beneficiaries: Thales, Leonardo, Indra, Radmor, Bittium and Rhode & Schwarz.
Maximum amount of Union contribution: EUR 37 000 000 (EUR 20 000 000 in 2019 and EUR 17 000 000 in 2020)."
