Hey, since there’s a lot of talk about trading etc. here, I’d like to ask you what other hobbies you have besides the stock market?
I can start myself.
Trampoline gymnastics once a week in Ikuri. I really like the sport and want to develop in it. I also follow the competitive side semi-actively.
Music: I’ve listened to music my whole life. From radio’s Lady Gaga, Agents, and Katy Perry to Ice Cube and Martin Garrix, through to Ariana Grande’s latest productions.
Computers have been a big interest for several years, as has the entire IT sector, and I try to follow it actively every week. For example, I have a self-built PC based on hobby and education. I completed a data processing degree (datanomi) from 2016-2019 at Tredu in Tampere.
German language. I’ve been studying it since 2014, starting in middle school. Nowadays, I write songs in German and chat with my German friend weekly. I was in Germany from January to March 2019. Doing practical training at a university.
There are others, but here are a few. (If the administration does not consider the message appropriate, it can be deleted without separate notice.) Of course, it would be nice to hear what led to the decision.
I don’t have any hobbies. My life is boring. It always annoys me when new people ask about hobbies when getting to know me. I haven’t figured out a good answer to that yet, since I don’t do anything and don’t really have any interests.
I am here because this has been a reasonably rewarding place to get information, financially speaking. It doesn’t have a huge impact on my life; I might as well not have been here, but then my wealth would probably be a bit smaller. It doesn’t really matter anyway, I don’t use that money for anything. I just accumulate it.
In terms of time usage, my top 2 are exercise and reading. Sports hobbies evolve and change with age. Nowadays, I don’t feel like competing in any physical sport anymore, as recovery is slower, injuries heal slower, and they occur more easily. Bouldering, acrobatics, frisbee golf, and then jogging and lifting weights according to other commitments. 1-2 books/month.
Otherwise, I occasionally strum the guitar and go to the pub to play billiards.
A couple of hobbies above all others: hunting and the gym. With both hobbies, you get to fully focus on being with yourself, and you don’t even have to follow stock market prices so intently in between
"Work is now a hobby for me; I try to do it in a way that’s enjoyable. I get a lot of exercise at work, and I often find myself thinking about how to do things better/easier. It’s quite simple, though, as I have about 30 years of experience, with some studies in between.
For about 20 years, I worked a bit too hard, grinding my teeth, but I guess that was okay at the time, so I don’t regret it. But now, it’s more like a hobby.
And then there’s hanging around on investment forums, that’s another one.
If I start longing for something else, then I’ll do something different.
And I have children, so there are plenty of activities :)"
I’ve always wondered about that definition of a hobby. A good friend of mine once quipped about it very cleverly
“I wonder how people who travel abroad once or twice a year say they are passionate about travel. By the same token, I could say I’m passionate about sex”
On that basis, I don’t really actively pursue anything other than investment-related things and diverse sports. Hunting and fishing, of course, but a little less often.
Planning. First, where to go, how to get there, what to do, where to stay, etc… that’s when Google gets a workout searching for destinations and then getting to know them in advance.
What one considers a hobby is probably between the hobbyist’s ears, regardless of how often they do it. 2020 was, of course, an exceptional year, but in the last two full years, I’ve only managed one theater visit and one opera. Yet, I absolutely pursue both as hobbies! Lapland in all its forms has also been a hobby of mine since summer 2019, which I hopefully can return to more thoroughly this year. Even without corona, there was a rather long break during my busy years (1997-2005).
At least in July, I got to visit Savonlinna to enjoy vendace, even without the opera
Yes, I do consider ice swimming one of my hobbies, even though you can only do it in winter. Except, because of corona, not even then, since places are closed.
It makes you feel really good, though I hardly think it’s some miracle cure for all diseases, as some people say. But in cold water, you don’t really think about investments or anything extra, even if you try. Sometimes it’s really good to get into a state where you just forget about the world for a moment.
For me, traveling is a hobby, just like jogging.
As it’s already been stated here, traveling is more than just the trip itself.
Especially now that I haven’t been able to go anywhere, I realize how much I miss traveling.
The old saying goes that it’s not a hobby if it doesn’t take all your money . This is certainly true. Year by year, the demands for the trip grow, and so does the price.
I don’t really always understand that travel frenzy abroad. Billions of money are poured out of the country and it’s polluted by flying. Perhaps the inevitable decrease in business travel will force ticket prices to rise to such an extent that the city green’s cycling holiday in Copenhagen no longer tempts so much.
My own hobbies don’t cost much at all. Or well, it does come with a price when I take unpaid leave for longer cabin trips, so to that extent, yes.
My journey goes much further than Copenhagen. And I’m not really interested in climate change. If ticket prices go up, I’ll buy foreign tenderloin. People are very concerned about others’ travel but their own consumption gets less attention. Air travel causes resentment in many, but as long as China and other developing countries are pushing coal into the sky and destroying nature and rare animals to extinction, there’s no need to lose sleep over flying. Travel also brings billions to Finland.
Exactly, so you could say that over half of traveling is preparing for it and so on. Last year, before the pandemic, I went to travel fairs, bought stuff, planned routes, looked at flights, etc., as I was supposed to go on a longer trip again in December. A lot of time was spent on planning, even though the whole thing went south spectacularly.
Domestic travel is also travel, and last year I traveled around here so much that it definitely counts as a hobby
Exercise is absolutely number one. It is also the key to health in old age and to overall well-being. In addition to my regular job, I also work as much as I feel like it, so I have enough money for investing. I also enjoy reading investment-related articles and forums.
Gym, investing, struggled to study Japanese. Also been into motorcycling for over 7 years. Last weekend I also got a moped (pappatunturi), so old motor vehicles fascinate me. My dream would be to gain more free time for hobbies through investments.
I’ve been training with weights for over 20 years, and for a while, I had my own personal trainer. I never competed in powerlifting, nor would I have done well in actual competitions, but I trained hard and quite systematically for a long time, without breaks, except for illnesses and recovery weeks. I’m still in good shape, so nowadays I train hard but without specific goals or very heavy weights – I intend to stay healthy. These days, I focus more on pumping and feeling the muscles at the gym, but still working hard.
Investing became a more important thing three years ago, and now I’m fully committed to it. Before, I was just very, very frugal, quickly paying off my mortgage and keeping a good buffer in my bank account.
