Coinbase - crypto services and trading platform

I can imagine that ARKK’s ETF portfolio managers also had some kind of similar view of the upcoming earnings report. It certainly wasn’t easy to make the decision to sell at a heavy loss.

Q2 / 2022 saw a loss of almost 1.1 billion, but the share price just keeps going up

This is interesting. I personally bought the stock at around $52 or €52, but more as an experiment. I trust the company, both in its downturn and upturn, but I’m otherwise lost on its true value. Or rather, I mean I believe it won’t be the first company to run out of money and then close customer accounts.

But at $52/€, it already felt so cheap, so I decided to try it for a shorter-term portfolio. Someone wise could tell me what the real situation with the company is?

The results show the wild cyclicality of cryptocurrencies. During a bull market, they make insane profits when prices are high and people are excitedly buying. Now, during the crypto winter, the situation is the opposite. From one extreme to another. Of course, other factors also influence both directions, for example, the BlackRock (Blackrock) partnership created a lot of faith in the future. Then again, there was a situation with the authorities, for example, in an insider trading case, similar to what happened at our stable and always reliable Solidium, which manages our pensions

Coinbase is the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States and, consequently, one of the key players in the industry. Founded in 2012, the company listed on Nasdaq in 2021 and has since expanded its services to include staking, stablecoins, and even solutions for institutional clients.

However, the company has faced challenges such as regulatory uncertainties and market volatility. The SEC’s lawsuit and the development of the crypto sector affect its outlook.

The Company as an Investment

Coinbase is one of the leading and dominant cryptocurrency exchanges, and its market value has risen significantly in recent years. The company has demonstrated its ability for strong growth, and its stock has comfortably risen over 110 percent in the last 12 months as of this writing. The last quarter showed good performance, with Coinbase exceeding market expectations in its latest earnings release, and this strong momentum continues this quarter (more on that below). This development is largely a result of growing interest in *staking and subscription-based services, whose share of revenue has grown significantly.

*AI explanation of staking, a new concept for me

Staking means locking up a certain currency or sum of money, usually in cryptocurrencies, to participate in network operations and earn rewards from it. For example, in cryptocurrency proof-of-stake (PoS) systems, by staking coins, one can earn more coins over time.

However, the company’s future prospects evoke both optimism and concern – big risks and big opportunities. Crypto markets are notoriously volatile, and Coinbase’s stock price has followed the broader fluctuations of the industry, which is important to remember. The regulatory environment is also a key factor for the company’s future – potential new regulatory decisions could either ease or complicate its business; furthermore, it’s advisable to follow Musk and Trump, as they can move these markets intentionally or unintentionally. On the other hand, growing interest from institutional investors could strengthen the company’s position in the market, which might slightly reduce risks.

Looking to the future, Coinbase aims to expand its business beyond crypto trading by investing in areas such as blockchain technology, payment services, and also derivatives. The company also benefits from the growing popularity of stablecoins, such as USDC; although competition in the sector is fierce, Coinbase’s established position and diversifying service offerings can support its long-term growth.

Q4/2024

(Here it is  , I couldn’t get anything better done in an hour, but luckily the company was already familiar to me. I only used Wikipedia, Google, X, and various short articles, so it didn’t turn out to be anything more elaborate than this. There might be misunderstandings and other issues, I have to translate most of the text into Finnish as I don’t know English very well, and AI also helped with understanding. I also left out things I didn’t understand at all.)

And let’s continue with the Q4/2024 theme:

Coinbase’s Q4 was strong, both in terms of earnings and revenue. Trading revenues increased significantly, and the subscription and services business also grew rapidly; furthermore, a positive sign was the growth of the “international side” + the fact that the number of active users continued to rise.

Profitability improved significantly, and the operating margin also strengthened clearly from before. Expenses grew, but their share of revenue remained under control. The company maintained its strong cash flow and increased the amount of assets under its management.

Coinbase continued its expansion into new markets and strengthened its derivatives trading offerings. It was also reported how the premium service attracted many new customers.

The company expects strong growth to continue in the early part of the year, and its strategy is to focus on its key markets and further expand its service portfolio.

@jaska7, @Olli_Koponen went through the results in their video for about seven minutes.

Coinbase received court permission to appeal during the legal process, which means there is significant ambiguity regarding the regulation of crypto transactions. Another court required the SEC to better justify the rejection of the proposed rule. Coinbase is also monitoring the impact of the SEC’s new crypto working group and estimates that the regulatory approach may change.

Apparently, something good might come out of this case for Coinbase.

Analysts significantly raised the trading platform’s target price (280 -> 400 ) and maintained a buy recommendation.

According to the tweet, investor confidence is strengthened by the company’s market share growth in crypto trading, as well as potential regulatory easing that could improve its business environment. Volatility and price fluctuations also increase the number of trades, which supports the company’s future prospects.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong suggests that US legislation should allow stablecoin companies to pay interest to their customers. Current legislative proposals prevent this, but according to Armstrong, stablecoins should offer interest in the same way as traditional savings accounts, without excessive regulatory requirements.

“Unlike interest-bearing checking and savings accounts, stablecoins do not currently benefit from the same exemptions under the securities laws that allow issuers to pay interest to users.”

Coinbase reported strong results, along with increased cash reserves and successful international expansion.

Innovations such as Bitcoin-backed loans and improvements to the Base platform support growth. The dismissal of the SEC lawsuit and the strengthening of derivatives investments reinforce the company’s position for long-term development.

In the future, Coinbase is particularly focused on expanding the everyday use of cryptocurrencies, as well as developing its trading platform and underlying infrastructure. The acquisition of Deribit strengthens its position in the derivatives market and brings additional stability + growth potential to the company’s revenue streams.

Can that be correct in the picture,
EPS: $0.24 vs. (est. $2.09) ?

Quite a big miss if it’s true, or how should this be interpreted?

Estimates have been high.

I’m not sure, but:

EPS probably decreased significantly because Coinbase recorded nearly $600 million in losses from its crypto investments in this quarter.

Most of these are unrealized losses, if I understood correctly. If these investment losses were removed, it would look different.

Net income in Q1 was $66 million and was impacted by $597 million in pre-tax losses on our crypto asset
investment portfolio, the vast majority of which were unrealized. Adjusted net income was $527 million and
Adjusted EBITDA was $930 million.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said the company is indeed aiming to become the world’s leading financial application within the next 5–10 years, as cryptocurrencies are believed to revolutionize the financial sector.

The company focuses on trading and payments and develops services for various customer groups. Stablecoins have emerged as a significant source of income, and according to the CEO, traditional banks are increasingly interested in crypto.

Are this company’s user numbers in good shape?

Coinbase confirmed on Thursday, according to the story below, that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating whether the company has exaggerated its user numbers. The investigation specifically concerns the number of “verified users,” which Coinbase has not reported for two and a half years. The company says it has been open about the matter and continues to cooperate with authorities.
