Bittium. What thoughts?

Shouldn’t it say Bittium-BAE on that list then? In my opinion, this case doesn’t look very good right now. Well, fortunately, this hadn’t been priced into the share price.

I don’t think so; Bittium is likely involved as a subcontractor/hardware supplier for BAE (hopefully), and BAE is the sole lead contractor.

It is likely a question of some kind of subcontracting model, in which case naturally only the name of the main contractor is displayed.

To refresh your memory, here is an old release from 2024 that shed some light on the nature of the cooperation.

@Karoliina_Malmi

Hi Karoliina, the owners here and on the Kauppalehti forum are looking for updates from you regarding the status of the UK tender. Has Bittium been dropped, are we moving forward, or is BAE moving forward utilizing Bittium’s expertise?

It’s been nice to see several press releases during the week,

We are now waiting for major deals—Sweden?

Germany?

The UK?

JEF COUNTRIES?

I thank you and bow in advance for your great work.

That unsuccessful list only concerned Slot 1 (services - integrations), which isn’t a Bittium thing. I guess what’s crucial is knowing how Bittium did in Slots 2 and 3. Slot 1 doesn’t really matter; it’s basically more of what BAE does. So, I suppose we can still be hopeful after all?

Edit:

Actually, all the slots are there on different tabs, and Bitti is listed as unsuccessful in all of them, so that’s that.

There are also tabs for lot2 and lot3, which have the same thing going on.

What of it? Did someone imagine that Bittium would be the direct supplier there? The option all along has been that BAE is among the suppliers and Bittium subcontracts or licenses to BAE. It was also stated quite clearly by the politicians there that they favor their own. Let’s remember that BAE has an agreement with Bittium that allows them to offer Bittium’s products.

Hi and greetings from Paris! A quick comment regarding the UK tender: BAE participated in the tender as a consortium and has qualified for the next stage. Bittium is part of this consortium.

Greetings to the thread,

this ultimately seemed to be a somewhat misleading intermediate stage in the entire process. As Karoliina mentioned above, Bittium is involved through BAE’s consortium, as was to be expected. Bittium had also applied independently, but for one reason or another, that didn’t pass through the process. However, I have personally assumed that success will come through BAE, if it comes at all. As previously noted, partner selections and tenders also have a political dimension and a so-called “home-field advantage.”

This phase was apparently some kind of mechanical elimination round, and a large number of competitors are still involved. Thales, L3Harris, Elbit, and other relevant companies are all moving forward—as is Bittium through BAE. From a Finnish perspective, it’s worth mentioning that KNL Networks Oy was also involved—great news for them.

But as I understand it, no actual orders have been placed yet; rather, the framework has been established, and within that, actual bids for different areas will begin. So, this was more of a stage to filter out the companies that are permitted to submit those bids. The timeline for how this proceeds from here remains unclear to me, but I believe there will be silence at least until June 26th, when that first window opens.

What caused confusion and a headache for me was that the website made it look as if a specific supplier had already been chosen. Specifically, this part:

Apparently, this is just unclear communication and some kind of representation of the eventual outcome of the process once it eventually gets there. Of course, one would hope for clearer communication from a government agency, but it is what it is. It’s comforting that no one else seems to know how to interpret these either. In any case, that made me pause for a moment and monitor announcements from potential winners. I haven’t noticed a reaction to the matter from anyone significant.

Well, my best estimate at the moment is that nothing has essentially changed for Bittium. They are in the competition through BAE, and the UK process is progressing in its typically slow and uncertain fashion.

PS. While browsing, I came across this from Elbit. It seems that players in the field are releasing announcements in much the same cycle.

PPS. By the way, I started my summer holiday at the end of last week, which may slow down my response time in the near future. Have a great summer, everyone!

SEB comments on the UK tender.
The total potential is EUR 200-300m for SDR radios, which will likely be divided among various parties.

 Sounds modest, considering we are talking about finished products rather than license-based revenue like in Spain?

The supplier list is long and also includes Bittium’s competitors L3Harris, Thales and Elbit Systems. No information was published on individual order sizes or allocations, but the estimated first contract date is between 26 June 2026 and 25 June 2029. We have estimated that the lifetime potential for SDR radios in the UK would be EUR 200-300m (if only one supplier) and additional potential for tactical IP networks. It seems that given the long list of qualified suppliers, multiple vendors may be chosen, which would mean smaller potential for individual supplier.

In the case of Bittium, we have recently enjoyed an exceptionally high volume of press and trade releases. The share price has fluctuated a bit over the past few weeks and has mostly been trending downwards, but trading volume has also decreased. Therefore, if someone wants to push it down, they can easily do so with trades involving just a few shares.

In the big picture, we are moving in the right direction.

The latest issue of the Medical Journal (Lääkärilehti) features an article on using AI for brain monitoring. Cerenion’s software and Bittium’s BrainStatus are currently in use at all Finnish university hospitals, among others. This speeds up diagnostics for epilepsy patients, for example. It is also used as part of prognosis assessments for unconscious patients resuscitated after cardiac arrest, as well as for monitoring brain function disorders related to critical illnesses. As a shareholder from Oulu, I was pleased to read this.
