Regarding the price of natural gas, Metsä Group has long been planning to build biogas plants next to its pulp mills to replace expensive natural gas purchased from the Gasgrid network and elsewhere.
I once followed the project related to Metsä Fibre’s Joutseno pulp mill, which was probably the first plant of its kind in Finland over 13 years ago. Today, a similar plant can also be found in Äänekoski. The biogas produced in Joutseno can also be sold to other industrial customers along the pipeline via Gasgrid’s natural gas network.
Here is an illustrative image for those interested in how the system works in practice.
