Users certainly make profiling easy for Meta through their own foolishness, but it isn’t impossible for Reddit either, if users use the platform via the app instead of the website. Or rather, it’s enough if you use Reddit via the app occasionally. You can grant the app permissions for things like location, and these have naturally been scrutinized on Reddit:
Personally, I’ve used the app so far because it’s “okay,” but I use it while denying all unnecessary permissions.
This thread has also referenced volunteer moderation and its problems, but that is the very lifeblood of the whole platform. Users create communities themselves, which they then moderate. Some subreddits are better moderated than others. AI slop is flagged very effectively in some subreddits, while others have already given up.
Reddit is actually the only one of these social media platforms I still like, and that is precisely because of the anonymity. I have, of course, noticed increased advertising, but it hasn’t been a nuisance yet. When browsing on a PC, I always use adblockers and tracking prevention etc., so it doesn’t really matter. On the other hand, quite a lot can already be sniffed out from browser metadata and IP addresses, and when you combine this with my occasional app usage, my privacy is already gone here too ![]()
An interesting company for sure. I might put a small slice into this.
