Truly high-quality products

I don’t think I’m the only one who is totally fed up with modern products. Many times I’ve noticed that even if I try to buy quality and pay a slightly higher price (e.g., rubber boots, shoelaces, whatever), the higher price definitely doesn’t correlate with the product’s quality. Behind this, planned obsolescence, i.e., the light bulb hoax ( Suunniteltu vanheneminen – Wikipedia), certainly plays a role (it might be conspiracy theory rambling, but I think it has its place in today’s economy).

On the forum, I came across this brand Nousu, which at least tries to manufacture durable quality clothing. As an example, an excerpt from the tracksuit jacket’s information:

\u003e The jacket’s knit tested in TAMK’s textile lab (MARTINDALE pilling test) - rating EXCELLENT

Without personal experience, this Nousu gives the impression that a higher price might be justified if the trousers, for example, would last more than one year (my own tracksuit bottoms last a maximum of one year, even though I don’t engage in street fights on a gravel bed).

Examples of poor price-quality ratio are certainly abundant for many others, but the purpose of this thread is to bring to light proven quality products that stand the test of time. So, tell us about your own good experiences with any products whose quality you have been satisfied with. It doesn’t matter if the product is a Tokmanni scented candle or Castrol gearbox oil. Reasoned answers, please!

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 studded tires. Once you get these on your car, there’s no going back… So quiet, comfortable to drive, and very stable. I’ve had to do a couple of emergency stops this winter when an elderly person pulled out in front of me from a yield sign, and the car stops so fast your head snaps forward—you really have to be careful with the brake pedal.

I second this, the best winter tires I’ve ever had. The Michelin X Ice North series has also been good, but these are even better.

When I saw the headline, I was about to come and rave about Nousu. But that’s exactly what this thread already started with. I’ve bought many of the company’s products, and especially the tracksuits and beanies deserve unreserved praise. Of course, without downplaying the other products at all. The style is also spot on; whew, I think I have about seven different Nousu tracksuits hanging on the rack already…

Staying with clothes, I buy my jeans from Varusteleka these days. I’m talking about the company’s own Särmä brand. They are also sewn in Estonia, which by modern standards is quite local production. Their durability is top-notch even compared to many so-called premium brands.

Logitech MX Master mice. Actually, I don’t have experience with the newer generations yet because the original is still in use. After this, it’s hard to understand how I ever used just any random mice. The mouse is ergonomic, precise, and even quite heavy, and the flywheel-like scroll wheel is awesome. Highly recommended for everyone who uses a computer.

I bought my first and only pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses in 2015. These Ray-Bans have been to the bottom of the sea, dropped numerous times on hard surfaces, and have otherwise seen heavy daily use every summer. Last summer, the glasses fell off my head while cycling and slid a long way on the asphalt, and the lens got its FIRST major scratch after 8 years of use. The hinges and nose pads are still in very good condition. I remember paying about €180 for the glasses in 2015, which was a lot for my income level at the time, but these years have taught me that you don’t always have to save on everything. Quality is worth paying a small premium for.

Bose noise-canceling headphones have proven to be very good. I’ve used the same pair for 5 years now, and while the battery life has degraded slightly, it hasn’t hindered use at all and is minimal compared to other small electronics. The ear pads wear down quite a bit with my daily use, but they are easy to replace—I’ve already done it once and will need to do so again soon.

I can say that my Ray-Bans have lasted for more than 40 years. Now they could use a little adjustment to the hinges and the temples as well. There are a few small marks on the lenses, but they haven’t been a problem. I originally received them as a gift from my father. They have seen heavy use at sea, while cycling, on trips, etc. Unfortunately, presbyopia already prevents me from using them :sunglasses:

Nokia 3210. Over the last 20-plus years, phones have come and gone, and I’ve always had to bring the old-timer back into service as a backup. It is actually my phone right now. Nokia has cranked out some quite miserable phones lately. Even this old lady’s battery still easily lasts five days with light use.

The battery also brings to mind the Yuasa battery in my ATV. The ATV is a 2006 model, and yet the original battery is still humming along. A couple of winters ago, the power was left on and the battery was drained for a couple of weeks. After a little resuscitation, it recovered and is still in use.

The Honda BF 2.3 (4-stroke) outboard motor serves as a third example; just change the oil every couple of years and it’s good to go. It starts on the second pull at the latest, and even after winter, by the fourth pull at the most.

Great thread, thanks to the OP.

Kuoma children’s shoes for babies and toddlers.

  • we tried half a dozen shoes, but these are the only ones that are easy to put on and take off. Great shoes.
  • expensive, €60 a pair, but the resale price on tori.fi is also €30.

Meira ketchup. Price per kilogram is roughly one euro cheaper compared to Felix and Heinz. The taste is also spot on.

  • Tomato puree approx. 80% compared to Heinz and Felix’s approx. 60%
  • Price per kilogram about a euro cheaper than Heinz and Felix.
  • Domestic
  • No additives.

The product is very good. Only the packaging cap is poor: it makes a mess and the hinge breaks easily.

100% agreed. I also “returned” to my childhood and bought myself a pair of Kuomas now that I’m around 30. They are absolutely incredible winter boots when you don’t have to worry so much about how they “look”. They aren’t slippery and your feet are always warm (even if it’s -30 degrees). It’s also easy to drive a car in Kuomas (this was something I was really wondering about).

Agree with these :+1: You can also easily order original spare parts for Ray-Bans online (e.g., replacementlenses.net) – I personally revived a pair of sunglasses that I accidentally sat on, which broke the hinge on the temple side. Just replaced it with a new matching temple and the glasses are like new again.

Edit: And I should also mention that when I asked a local optician if these could still be repaired, they told me they can’t really be fixed :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: It really “required” so much effort that I ordered the part online and replaced the temple and screw myself with a precision screwdriver.

An authentic hand-woven rug, supposedly expensive back in 2002, but still in mint condition, and the same could be said for the Natuzzi leather sofa, which is also like new despite being over 20 years old.

Freenote Cloth Portola jeans. I used to struggle with Levi’s ripping until I switched to a thicker fabric and raw denim.

A Le Creuset pot. It has lasted through 15 years of cooking without any signs of wear. I’m fairly certain it will eventually be passed down from my estate to future generations.

Danner shoes (https://global.danner.com/) I have the Mountain Pass (Made in USA) and they’re damn good.

Hydroflask water bottle (keeps water cold for 12+ hours, by the way)

Herrainpukimo (Made-to-measure suits) compared to, for example, Boss suits at Stockmann. Suitsupply is also good at a slightly lower price point.

Great, this discussion is needed. I have also found that you can’t get quality even with money. The only way would be to buy the fabrics yourself and have the clothes custom-made, but in my case, it would be too expensive, even if the clothes lasted longer than ready-made items.

One high-quality product I’ve found to be good in my own use is Tempur mattresses.
