Nokia as an investment (Part 4)

“definitive agreement” is the term used, so I guess the deal is done, though of course the wind-down of the old ops / conversion (planning for InP) is underway there?

Finland-based telecom equipment maker Nokia Corp says that, as part of its long-term plans for optical component manufacturing capacity expansion, it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Chandler Semiconductor Fabrication campus in Arizona of NXP Semiconductors N.V. of Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Opened in September 2020, the fab has been focused on RF gallium nitride (GaN), but was scheduled to be closed by NXP in 2027.

Subject to the receipt of certain regulatory approvals, Nokia will initially lease manufacturing capacity in part of the facility on the site starting in early 2027 and will convert the site for the production of indium phosphide (InP)-based optical communications chips, targeting the booming demand for AI data-center applications. Nokia will then acquire the full site, with the transaction expected to close in first-quarter 2029.

“Neither Anthropic nor Nscale has confirmed the number publicly. Both Bloomberg and CNBC attributed it to sources. Nscale is in the middle of preparing a US listing, which is exactly the period in which contract values tend to be described generously and confirmed reluctantly. Treat $45 billion as a well-sourced report, not a filed figure.”

Jeez, these headlines – “Nokia’s share price rising sharply”.

Last time I checked, the stock had dropped over 10% in a week. And it looks like it’s heading for a steep decline today too, following yesterday’s weak US close.

Maybe something along the lines of “Nokia’s AI business on a strong rise” would be better – or something similar. But the stock has undeniably been on a downtrend for several months now.

Let’s hope for really positive news on Thursday; if not, it probably won’t be pretty for Nokia’s share price. https://stockinvest.us/stock/NOK

AI found some differences

Summary

I found the original Nokia release from Friday, October 16, 2026. It hasn’t completely vanished from the web, even though Nokia changed its URL and published a new version today, October 20.

Yes, there are differences between the versions. I went through both. The most interesting changes are in the technical details and how Nokia describes the scope of cooperation and commercialization.

1. Main technical change: ARC-Pro → ARC

Friday’s text mentioned NVIDIA’s ARC-Pro reference platform. Today, Nokia names the setup as the NVIDIA Aerial RAN Computer (ARC).

This might look like a notable product name change, but based on the texts, one cannot conclude that the hardware or the substance of the agreement has changed. Both describe the same underlying solution:

  • NVIDIA Grace CPU
  • NVIDIA RTX PRO 4500 GPU
  • NVIDIA ConnectX-8 networking technology
  • SoftBank’s AITRAS platform and orchestration
  • Nokia’s anyRAN software and MantaRay management and automation solution.

2. What is relevant for an investor?

Both releases contain the same actual commitment: a field trial to be conducted in a commercial network in 2027. The new version does not announce an order, deal value, commercial deployment schedule, or revenue.

Instead, SoftBank’s own Oct 20 release provides useful additional confirmation: the AITRAS platform is specifically being developed as a common platform for multi-vendor RAN software and AI applications. Nokia is thus involved in demonstrating that its anyRAN and MantaRay work within SoftBank’s environment.

Why was Friday’s release removed?

Friday’s URL now returns a 404 error, but the search engine-indexed content and original headline can still be found.

I cannot confirm why Nokia took down the old page. Plausible explanations include a technical correction to the publication, clarification of the product name, or republishing of the press release.

My own conclusion: I see no evidence in these changes that Nokia has secured a new order or that the commercial significance of the agreement has increased over four days. The most crucial question remains whether the 2027 trial will lead to commercial deployment and broader delivery. The republication alone proves neither.

Over on the Kauppalehti forum there was this link, which includes another link at the end (with data) related to this AI sell-off that @Lexus pointed out above

Yes, in my opinion, it’s clear that the AI sector is being dragged down by the power of major hedge funds. That much money has been poured into it. Thursday could be an interesting day if earnings and guidance beat expectations.

Looks like a classic Wall Street tactic… squeezing every dollar out before the next investment wave begins. I reckon the Sovereign angle is one we’re going to be hearing a lot more about! The UK (Nscale) site that Microsoft pulled out of looks like becoming part of this kind of infrastructure… Nscale are still commited and ready for someone to step in! Thinking of the deal Nokia Defense did with the UK, this looks like the obvious step! Power supply rules also in the UK have been changed in accordance with this…

The day after tomorrow will likely bring the first real baptism of fire for Hotard and also for Board Chair Ihamuotila: actuals vs. expectations and guidance vs. expectations:fire:. We’ll find out whether or not they really are once again the top tier in technology execution.

This came out today.

AlphaValue/Baader Europe on Tuesday raised Finnish telecommunications equipment company Nokia to add from reduce.

Apparently, the target price is somewhere around €9.50, as they have kept it at that level for quite some time already. But I can’t see any more details.

The most interesting things about tomorrow’s results will be the order intake, the ramp-up of the San Jose factory, and whether insiders buy just like they did after Q2/2026

Yeah, insiders can buy after the earnings release

Nokia and SoftBank have agreed to conduct commercial AI-RAN field trials in Japan in 2027. These trials will take place within an active mobile network, integrating Nokia’s anyRAN software with SoftBank’s AITRAS platform and technology from Nvidia.

  • Bank of America reiterated its “buy” rating for Nokia with a price target of €16, anticipating that the company’s third-quarter report would include over €2 billion in AI-related orders—a figure lower than the €2.8 billion recorded in the second quarter

I learned today while chatting with an AI (sharing it here for others too) that the FIN-FSA notification threshold for short positions when a position changes (e.g., Two Sigma) is a 0.10% change. Meaning, within that 0.1%, the position can fluctuate—so roughly ±5.7 million shares can move daily without needing to report it to the FIN-FSA :frowning_face_with_open_mouth: This was news to me, apologies if this is useless spam, I had assumed it needed to be “reconciled” daily.

All in all, quite the playing field, and those are just the visible ones; the option plays that are potentially being hedged here aren’t visible publicly anywhere, not in Europe and surprisingly not in the US either.

So the yellow one came back above the 0.5% threshold, and after that in +0.1 increments, except for the Oct 12 notification which is only 0.08%, but there’s probably some “netting” in the background.
