Jazz musician Severi Pyysalo has died at the age of 58. The news of his death has been confirmed to HS by Pyysalo’s close circle.
Pyysalo’s main instrument was the vibraphone, and he was one of the most respected masters of it in the world. He made his breakthrough at the age of 16 as a talent at Pori Jazz in the summer of 1984.
No, I sold those a few years ago when I realized I didn’t really understand where the industry was developing, and my motivation to own the company dwindled.
Inderes asked me to clarify my investor profile. Well, why not, let’s clarify. I can easily answer that I am a private investor with over 20 years of experience. Answering questions about portfolio stocks, portfolio value, and my own age poses no difficulty.
One question gives me a headache:
“What level of risk do you invest with?”
Low
Medium
High
How on earth can one answer such a question, even in an investment-related context?
More generally, investment risks are discussed quite a lot without defining what risk means. This happens, for example, in discussions related to the fund management of pension assets.
Since my portfolio consists of funds with broad geographical, temporal, and sector diversification, and a direct portfolio of low P/E dividend stocks, I would give my own honest answer to the “retired person with 100% equity allocation” as:
With that selection, radio buttons should probably also be replaced with checkboxes?
I wasn’t so much surprised by user profiling, but what often jumped out at me was the very open concept of risk in discussions when I had to describe my own with a single radio button.
Risk is discussed as an important argument in the conversation, which it certainly is, but what is meant by risk often remains on an abstract level.
When the media reports on pension funds aiming for higher returns by accepting greater volatility as increasing risk, I bet most readers won’t be able to associate the term “risk” with the concept of equity risk, but will immediately call the national radio to complain about casino games with pension funds.
I allowed myself a small addition to what you wrote, just in case not all forum members have had to consider the functional differences between a checkbox and a radio button. You can select multiple checkboxes at once, but a radio button works like the waveband selector buttons on an old-fashioned radio receiver; when you press one, the other pops up. This means the options are mutually exclusive.
I agree with the oversimplification of risk level definition.
And really, thank you for your comments @740_GLE and @Hermot_Lehman! Those were originally from my pen and discussed with the team. The idea was to find useful but as universal and simple enough options for all users to answer. We’ll have to consider an additional survey and new data points based on the comments!
@Sijoittaja-alokas wake up! Soon we’ll get a subscription perfectly suited for value investors from the same counter, in addition to oat flakes and coffee powder
Great meme and insight, @Verneri_Pulkkinen. And your long article about First North’s performance, which I recall was published over the weekend.
The situation is indeed grim. I don’t understand it at all. Then again, I don’t understand much else either. I like to invest in small companies. Of course, in large ones too, but there’s something about the small ones. Like Fodelia, for example. You just hope to hit the right company and strike gold, but so far, it looks really bad. On the other hand, if one were to put their meager pennies into play now, they’d get it cheap, wouldn’t they? Or will this misery continue until the end of the world? Stock picking is an interesting sport.
Isn’t this a quite high-risk company in terms of its business operations? It’s a sensible business for sure, but also risky – if Fodelia were to truly show that Feelia’s business model is profitable, wouldn’t all major competitors from Compass to Palmia and Sodexo turn their laser eyes and vast resources to eliminate this competitive advantage?
A wide range of people read this forum, including students who will someday be in decision-making positions, as well as CEOs and board professionals. I believe in the power of continuous repetition and public education. Increasing research-based awareness of what works and what doesn’t will, in the long run, be net positive for the Finnish investor and corporate landscape! Or at least that’s what I believe…
It’s not like I’m just making things up with my eyes closed, but when I was checking out QT, I just saw that the front page had the date 14.4. so I assumed that was the earnings day.
It seems it was UN Day (United Nations Day) and earnings are a month away.
