Just now on the balcony, I let Apple Music randomly play 1990s rock songs for me, and then Scorpions’ “Wind of Change” started playing through my headphones. It was released in January 1991, a time when the Soviet Union was creaking at the seams before its final collapse. Listening to the lyrics of the song, I couldn’t help but think about how the great expectations for positive development back then have since been buried deep in the land of our eastern neighbor – unlike how the distant memories buried in the song’s lyrics have been dug up. And we didn’t become brothers, and even the children’s dreams seem to have changed

Below are the lyrics of the song.

I follow the Moskva
Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change
An August summer night
Soldiers passing by
Listening to the wind of change

The world is closing in
And did you ever think?
That we could be so close?
Like brothers
The future’s in the air
I can feel it everywhere
Blowing with the wind of change

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away (dream away)
In the wind of change
(Mmmmmmm)

Walking down the street
And distant memories
Are buried in the past forever
I follow the Moskva
And down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change

Take me (take me) to the magic of the moment
On a glory night (a glory night)
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams (share their dreams)
With you and me (you and me)
Take me (take me) to the magic of the moment
On a glory night (a glory night)
Where the children of tomorrow dream away (dream away)
In the wind of change (wind of change)

The wind of change blows straight
Into the face of time
Like a storm wind that will ring
The freedom bell for peace of mind
Let your balalaika sing
What my guitar wants to sing (sing)

Take me (take me) to the magic of the moment
On a glory night (a glory night)
Where the children of tomorrow share their dreams (share their dreams)
With you and me (you and me)
Take me (take me) to the magic of the moment
On a glory night (a glory night)
Where the children of tomorrow dream away (dream away)
In the wind of change (wind of change)

And the official music video below, in case someone doesn’t know anything about the song or wants to listen to it again as a nostalgia trip.

@Marianne_Palmu is educating in different parts of Finland, and this time she was apparently on a ship lecturing to Osinkoinsinööri and a few others.

Interesting
in OP’s mobile app, the entire OST has disappeared from the menus - as if I didn’t have one at all. And no error message about it, just a notice that “tariffs are shaking up the stock markets”

Are others experiencing the same problem?

P.S. This might belong in another thread, move it if appropriate

Edit: now afterwards I found a news article on Kauppalehti’s website that OP’s mobile services crashed
 published 14:29

Here is Henri Huovinen’s interesting article about buying the dip.

Buying the dip is a high-risk strategy when measured by volatility. The volatility of the strategy’s returns has been 7.5 percent per month, which is significantly higher than the benchmark strategy’s (you buy every trading day and hold for a month) 4.5 percent.

Subheadings:

  1. Is it worth buying stocks on the dip?
  2. What should an investor do?

Around that time, there was still a lot of hope regarding our neighboring country - it also brings to mind the Monster of Rock concerts in Moscow from the same era, which brought a breath of Western freedom to the locals

Since then, the Scorpions themselves started performing this part of the song at their gigs after Russia’s invasion
:

“I follow the Moskva
And down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change”

in the form of:
“Now listen to my heart / It says Ukrainia / Waiting for the wind to change.”

It will be interesting to see what the general opinion will be the next time power changes in Russia

Hey admin,

Currently, Trump, trade war, and tariffs are being discussed simultaneously in at least the following threads:

I suggest that threads be merged so that discussions can be followed. For example, the newest tariff war thread is unnecessary, as it would fit well under the USA thread or the Direction of Stock Markets thread. In the stock price enthusiasm thread, one should stay on topic.

Edit: At the same time, it’s worth remembering that you can get to Trump for a million dollars. This is all just f*cking illegal

In my opinion, these talks about “thread cultures” and individual writers’ guidelines on what can and cannot be written in different threads are a bit tragicomic.

The title defines what is discussed in the thread. The easiest and most logical way to adjust the direction of the discussion is therefore to edit the title. Everything else is ineffective meddling.

After the sauna, for Saturday evening’s entertainment, I have done a little detective work on the true identity of @Pappa_Tunturi from the Fortum thread and a little more; the research may not necessarily withstand academic scrutiny:

“I want to keep Fortum in my portfolio because it is a reliable dividend payer. If the stock fluctuates a bit in a certain direction, one can buy more of it. If the price goes high, one can sell and then buy it again before the dividend detaches, Mieto said.”

And then calculations with the help of ChatGPT

How many portions of mÀmmi can Juha Mieto buy with dividends if he owns 11,600 Fortum shares and the tax percentage on dividends is 25.5%?

  • Gross Dividends:
    11,600 shares × 1.40 € = 16,240 €
  • Taxes (25.5%):
    16,240 € × 0.255 = 4,141.20 €
  • Net Dividends:
    16,240 € − 4,141.20 € = 12,098.80 €
  • Portions of mĂ€mmi:
    12,098.80 € Ă· 2.50 € ≈ 4,839 portions

Answer: Juha Mieto receives approximately 4,839 portions of mÀmmi with the dividends from his Fortum shares after taxes.

Corrected calculation with up-to-date information provided by @Pappa_Tunturi / Juha and taking taxation into account.

It’s better to reply to this humorous message than to something more serious. Juurikki has long wondered why moderation doesn’t immediately remove messages that reveal or speculate about the real people behind usernames. Strange, no privacy protection.

Couldn’t we collectively decide that the connection between a username and its real-world representative should be a BIG SECRET. Why?

Because Juurikki knows of a username and a person from another social media platform who wrote smartly and practically got fired from their job when their identity was revealed.

Juurikki does not personally know the person, but would like to get to know them.

Indeed, threads evolve over time as the forum’s ethos and debaters change. For example, go read the first 25 messages of this thread (part 1). There you’ll find @Gadus’s cottage trip stories and @Johannes_Sippola’s matriculation exam studies. Nowadays, the coffee room mostly features quite different kinds of writings, because the thread’s culture has changed.

The title and the first message set the context, but ultimately it’s up to the debaters what the thread eventually becomes and what is ultimately written there. Sometimes the discussion veers into really wild directions and becomes so polarized that it’s more sensible to create a completely new thread. For example, the forum’s flagging thread was created because the coffee room was full of heavy bickering about flagging, and there was a desire to preserve the coffee room’s good vibe and lighter discussion culture:

Following up on the humorous message: I thought it was quite outrageous that the identity behind the username @_TeemuHinkula was specifically revealed at Inderes’ general meeting. Good thing I managed to catch my breath after the shock. But now that the person is “authorized,” where is the green dot?

Create a thread where one can write about any topic.. I, at least, have the impression that the coffee room is a place where one can discuss, ask, or ponder profound matters or the deepest essence of love relatively freely, as long as it’s done within the bounds of good taste, respecting other members.

In my opinion, the coffee room is suitable for this kind of free-form writing, and other threads could then focus more on their specific topics?

The fact that some discussion is spread across many threads is certainly due to those topics fitting many threads because the subject isn’t so restricted. Who does it bother anyway.? In a few months, no one will be talking endlessly about customs tariffs anymore, but probably about something completely different.

At what point did the custom of heating the sauna with gasoline become ingrained in Finnish sauna culture:

Well, the sauna certainly heats up quite efficiently that way. This is the third similar news story I’ve come across in the last few months.

This is quite close. However, the old man has 11,600 pcs of them, so the amount of dividends will be different. There will be a lot of dividends annually, after taxes.

Mieto is quite a funny person in himself, a true Ostrobothnian, just like Pappa-Tunturi :grinning:
