Financial sector as an investment

Here is an incredibly interesting article from a couple of years ago about asset management in practice. Suursijoittaja Antero Asunmaa oli vähällä pilata välit vanhempiinsa epäonnisella sijoituksella – ”Otin tappion kiinni isolla riskillä” | Arvopaperi

It’s about an ultra-wealthy client from an asset management perspective, for whom every single asset manager has been rolling out the red carpet since the beginning of the story in the 80s. :man_in_tuxedo:

The first interesting observation speaks to the change in the asset management market. That 80s “asset management” more closely resembles today’s investment tips in Kauppalehti. We’ve come a long way since those days.

Often, there is also an illusion associated with investing and asset management that all smart investors always act according to financial theory, making only optimal decisions. Usually, these boil down to comments like: “what smart investor would want to buy product X or Y?” or “why does anyone pay for asset management when they can just invest in indices?”.

Well, here a very wealthy investor and one of UB’s main owners openly praises structured index loans! There’s no point in accusing the asset manager of pulling a fast one here; rather, it’s about the investor’s own desire to invest in them.

Related to the previous theme, there is no talk here of beating the index; instead, the asset manager is praised for steady returns and sparring over ideas (of course, UB’s main owner has an incentive to praise UB here).

Summa summarum, it’s a good reminder that asset management is a service business and the value people perceive from the service is very case-specific
