This new efferocytosis review is also by a Chinese group. A lot of these are coming out of there now, especially on TAM and TME biology. Not a single breakthrough paper, but a good comprehensive review.
Macrophages clear dead cells and simultaneously activate an anti-inflammatory state (IL-10, TGF-β). When this goes awry, chronic inflammation occurs. In cancer, tumors can exploit this same mechanism for immunosuppression. Interestingly, Stabilin-1 (Clever-1) is one of these efferocytosis receptors. The paper doesn’t claim Clever-1 to be the most central target, but it is part of this basic mechanism of the immune system – that is, not a niche phenomenon but part of a broader system.
