New to this forum and new to stock investing (if you don’t count “buy and forget” indexes, which I’ve owned for almost ten years) and I couldn’t quickly find a thread on the topic - apologies if a similar one already exists ![]()
I have an account with Nordnet and would be interested in acquiring a few US stocks for my portfolio. Nordnet has a good article on the topic (USA-osakkeet | Nordnet), but a few questions for more experienced investors:
“With foreign securities, withholding tax on income is generally levied at the source of income by the local sub-custodian. Nordnet pays the dividend or other income from the security to the customer, reduced by the amount of withholding tax levied. The withholding tax rate for the USA and Canada is 15%.”
What does this mean in practice, explained in simple terms? After the dividend distribution, Nordnet pays out the dividend having already handled the withholding tax deduction, and I don’t need to do anything myself?
Are there any other things I need to do differently if I own a domestic stock?
