Crediting of dividends from foreign company shares to account

At Verneri’s request, I’m opening this thread :grinning:

I want to ask those wiser than me about the kind of delay there is between the dividend payment date and its crediting to the account, when it comes to dividends paid by companies located in the United States? For future reference, I would also be interested in hearing about the delay for dividends paid by European companies.

I’m mainly asking this because I’ve been waiting for a dividend from a US-based company, whose payment date was July 11th, and the dividend still hasn’t appeared in my account.

Thanking you in advance for any possible answers :blush:

Hi,
With Nordnet, it easily took at least a week, if not a couple of weeks, so ask your bank. It depends on how long the subcontracting chain they use to connect to the exchanges is. With my current broker (IB), it comes on the right day.

I know you said American, but I’ll still put it here. I received dividends from a Norwegian firm on the same payment day :slight_smile: (Which is today)

Hi there, and thanks for your replies. It took two weeks to get the dividends, which was the bank’s estimate when I inquired about it. However, the bank estimated that it is quite possible that it could take up to fourteen banking days to receive the dividends, which admittedly feels like a rather long time.

Kopparbergs paid a dividend today, to my surprise it had already arrived in my Nordnet account overnight. Finnish dividends often only arrive late in the afternoon.

I’m personally looking forward to the dividends from the UK, Germany, and Denmark and their crediting to my account. For example, a dividend from a US bank was in my account on the payment date, while for some other companies, it might take the payment date + 14 banking days for the dividends to be credited… I would assume that Germans, being precise people, would ensure the money is in the account by the dividend payment date, but I’m waiting with bated breath.

P.S. @Sijoittaja_Pohjanmaa did you have to fight with a foreign tax authority about dividend taxation?

Haven’t had to fight yet. The USA and Sweden take a 15% withholding tax according to the tax treaty. The Finnish tax authority will then take the rest in due course.

{“content”:“I have the same experience with the tax authorities in the USA and Sweden; they respect tax treaties between countries. Unfortunately, Denmark seems to be the only one that doesn’t, and because of this, one might have to fight with the tax authorities. The Danish tax authorities’ actions will become clear a bit later, but I’m prepared for the paperwork :slightly_smiling_face:”}
