Investment mistakes

In the summer of 2020, as a young budding investor, I took a view and a larger position in Loomis, a familiar cash handling company from our western neighbor. The company was already familiar to me, and I felt a Lynch-like awakening, especially considering the Finnish market. In January 2021, I even dared to open a thread for this company operating in a dying industry. The thread didn’t gain much traction; one user was spotted a week later in the buy/sell thread, stating that they had sold their position at a loss and had received the “tip” for the investment from this forum… I also came across a couple of lecture recordings where people I considered wiser than myself were scoffing at the use of cash. So what does Huhtis do? Well, he naturally sells the entire position at around 220 SEK and starts investing money in these “future” companies that have been buzzing in various threads.

With my average price of 200 SEK, that Loomis position would now be up 44%, plus dividends. Instead, I’m looking at several companies in my portfolio that are in the red. And even though the stock price hasn’t rocketed to the sky, in the current market, I would gladly accept this.

Of course, this is a long game, and the situation might turn upside down over time. However, I should have trusted myself and stuck to my guns more boldly. Over the past year, I have learned that the more buzz there is around a company, the more I want to avoid it. And vice versa, if no one is interested in it, it might create an interesting buying opportunity.
