Investment forum flagging discussion and post-mortem

I’m just commenting on the result of the poll. Besides, the day before yesterday I was actively discussing flagging that prevented our discussion about stocks. I think it’s quite natural to comment on that poll now.

Normally, I focus on investing, so this detracts from that side, but it depends on all users how this forum works. That’s why I think it’s important to focus on what’s essential.

Theoretically, flagging could have a role, but we’d recommend considering it carefully before use.

Isn’t it a bit much to claim that flagging prevents your discussions about stocks? If one discusses a stock (which means more than a one-line sentence of quality text), then surely no one will flag it.

I argue that most of the flagging discussions before the creation of this thread were precisely initiated by those people who become targets of flagging due to their own actions. It was clearly seen in the previous thread that even the urging of Inderes staff was not enough to stop the flagging discussion by those who wrongly adopted the role of a victim.

Now there are already threats of an independence movement if flagging practices are not drastically changed. In my opinion, it would be easier to change one’s attitude towards writing and act like other members of the investment forum.

So the flagging was real-time and interrupted our discussion in the thread. That already requires some serious lurking.

That’s where the discussion forum’s discussion dried up. I’m referring to a couple of days ago.

Otherwise, I believe that flagging currently causes more harm than good. But it is true that if we followed the rules, flagging should be several hundred percent more frequent.

Perhaps “prevent” is a strong expression, but as you noticed, it clearly caused at least a nuisance.

I don’t want to demonstrate how one could flag in different threads if the rules were followed.

I still recommend enthusiastic flaggers to consider carefully first and to take into account that most people here are discussing the topic and stocks, and to leave flagging for genuinely relevant trolling and personal attacks.

I assume that if Sampo or Fortum jumped 20% up without news and then 10% down from the original, that would be discussed quite relevantly.

We saw that in March-April too.

Looking back at the flagged posts in the FCEL thread, I think they were justified. Meri had asked a perfectly valid question (the share price is falling, couldn’t find a reason in the news, has anyone else found one?) and after that, the discussion turned into “buy/sell/wait for the dip/at what price what move” line – I’ve also commented generally that these price speculations and one-line questions/comments about trading just generate a huge amount of text to read if you try to find actual information among them later.

In the summer, I commented on this topic in the energy thread when almost 500 messages accumulated there in a short time, and a very large portion of them were similar idle chatter. It doesn’t bother so much if you read the thread online all the time, but if that many completely useless messages accumulate in a thread in a week, the thread quickly loses its meaning for someone who can’t sit at the thread all the time.

A general problem with discussion forums is precisely the lack of moderation, because it costs money and takes time for the administration. I think it’s really great that Inderes and the active members here are trying to do this work. My messages have also been flagged, and it doesn’t bother me – quite the opposite. Then you notice that the discussion is no longer sensible or is going off track. You shouldn’t lose your temper over these things, because so far, flagging is at a good level. Let’s take it as a positive thing, so the content of the Company threads will be better directed, and everyone will benefit from it. This trading etc. discussion can be done in many other threads intended for that purpose.

I wasn’t commenting on your message. The flagging practice always proves its functionality if it prevents, for example, the kind of “discussion” seen in the Fuel Cell thread.

One might as well think about those flagged messages. They are not flagged for no reason. Flagging means that such messages are not wanted in that particular thread, if anywhere.

Indeed, the hydrogen threads are quite a lot of playing around, when people boast about their own profits and stakes the size of single-family homes. Then, when flags appear, they threaten to leave and ponder ways to delete their own messages.

They have also been thinking about setting up some kind of FB group, etc. Such two-word utterances, wondering about prices, and boosting one’s own achievements belong in private groups.

Flags prevent unnecessary messages, and unnecessary messages prevent searching for information in company threads. That’s how it works.

We clearly disagree and a large amount of messages and content that at least to me were valuable at the time has been deleted… But just keep producing content, you wet behind the ears.

Of course, I myself think about my own actions.

It would be really great if we could get things working well here.

This wouldn’t even require a forum, but a completely free Discord server where the vibe in general is much more relaxed. Those investing in renewables. A channel for each company, #random #memes #profits&losses etc. A few moderators

I notice that I’m much more permissive in that kind of environment because the format is built to be much more conversational. I’ll join if something like that is set up :eyes:

It must be remembered that sometimes, and often in investing, speed is of the essence. Discussing things live allows an investor to react faster than the average investor to, for example, positive news, making it possible to make additions quickly and profitably.

I remember well that, for example, at some point there was a lot of complaining in the buy and sell thread when many active members had bought, for example, Plug at a price of 6-8 dollars from a dip, for which there were no reasonable justifications. It was worth acting quickly then, as the price has now risen to 13.5 dollars. The same happened with the latest Plug offering when the price dropped from 12.5 dollars to 10.3 and is now 13.5…

Such situations should be discussed quickly, and no flagging is needed for that.

Congratulations, however, to those who hoarded hydrogen and Plug then, we made a good purchase and profit! These situations will decrease significantly if the atmosphere here on the forum significantly worsens!

I’ll also add that this forum has previously worked well in situations like the hydrogen and energy threads.

Same with the “bought and sold” thread. But it doesn’t work as well anymore.

Would it be time to start a separate thread for @Meri, as in my opinion, they provide really useful and interesting information on various topics. And I’m sure many who have read the energy thread agree!

It’s a shame they “have to” quiet down now due to flagging policies.

Certainly a good idea if he’s interested and if we could discuss topics there! In the energy thread, off the top of my head, there are probably less than ten people whose messages and discussions are of initial interest to me.

I personally miss the vibe we had around the turn of the year, before the number of people interested in the threads exploded.

So why not open your own Hydrogen Coffee Room… could name it better though

Why does one have to be quiet? If you put factual content in threads (news/links, your own analysis, inquiries about the situation, etc.), there’s no reason why the message should be flagged. If, on the other hand, the messages are pure nonsense (like “and the rise continues ;)”), then flagging is deserved.

I don’t see a problem here, nor do I see a reason to be upset about valid flags received. Or even invalid ones, you can still see the messages even if they’ve been flagged…

And before anyone gets angry, I haven’t flagged a single message from that person. If the messages have been zero-content, I’ve asked for justifications.

So, would it be like we also create company-specific threads and add (coffee room) to the name .

Thanks for the messages regarding a possible alternative platform for hydrogen and other topics.

I don’t have the energy to actively organize anything at this point, but I hope that we can satisfactorily continue here without talented people in their fields getting tired of this forum, as there is a lot of good here too.

However, there is a lot of good here in one place.

Maybe the veterans decide how they want it, if they want it:wink:

Then just open three tabs in your browser. One for Inderes discussion forum, one for Reddit’s WallStreetBets, and one for Ylilauta’s Sekalainen (Miscellaneous).

Someone previously asked what I’m looking for, suggesting something, so here are my two cents, once again:

For me, it would be enough for the forum to operate according to the very clear boundaries and rules set by its administrator.

I don’t see why Inderes should open its own / new sandboxes for miscellaneous shenanigans for those who are not interested in following common rules, as the pace quickens and the previous ones’ behavior becomes too nitpicky for whomever.

Over and out, regarding this topic.

Becoming silent is one’s own choice, it’s not anyone else on the forum’s fault. And I think a more dignified way to become silent would be to just leave quietly without a tantrum.

Usually, the barking dog doesn’t even bite…
