Investment forum flagging discussion and post-mortem

Based on the title, I thought the thread was discussing stock exchange ownership disclosure announcements.

Good point! I’ve clarified the title.

I have to comment on this thread too, because the FuelCell thread left a rather bad taste in my mouth. :disappointed:

I understand that threads should have substance, but I don’t understand why comments need to be flagged if the message is not offensive/inappropriate/or otherwise useless.

To my knowledge, the Inderes forum is a DISCUSSION forum, not a News-linking forum?

I personally don’t bother clicking all links and reading everything that comes my way, but I gladly read and participate in discussions that appeal to me.
I ignore comments that don’t appeal to me. There’s no need to start flagging discussions just because of off-topic content
Usually, DISCUSSIONS don’t stay on one single topic all the time anyway

Generally speaking, the forum has had a good vibe, but lately, the constant flagging is starting to make it seem like I could spend my time on other things than clicking open flagged messages.

Would there be some constructive tool for this flagging frenzy, with which moderators could check how much each person flags and then sanction if the flagging is continuous???

Thanks anyway to the active folks who bother to share their opinions and link news.

Probably many of us “quieter” people have similar thoughts, but don’t bother or have the energy to post a message about it.

Let’s try to curb that flag button for those who are quick to press it, so we don’t make a good forum silent

Have a sunny day and green portfolios! :sunglasses:

This is an Investment Forum where investors help investors
Well-reasoned and well-argued discussions about investing are welcome.
Group rules briefly in English:
I) No one should be ridiculed or attacked personally
II) Keep the discussion on topic: do not comment if you cannot bring new content to the discussion. Humor is, however, encouraged.
III) No investment advice, sharing ideas is welcome!
IV) Encouraging discussion. Give good answers to everyone, including beginners.
The forum becomes exactly what the participants make of it. Support a constructive discussion culture on the forum. There are many of us here, and discussions can easily become muddled. Think before you send your answer, will it make the discussion higher quality and more enjoyable for others to read as well?

If these rules are not to the writer’s liking, they should consider whether this is the right forum to write in. You can always give feedback and suggestions for improvement, but they probably won’t be changed according to everyone’s wishes. In that case, a person who is constantly vocal and “dares” to throw out their suggestions would get all their will done, even if 1000 other users disagreed but were just the quieter sort.

And yesterday, things were perfectly fine in the F-cell discussion. Meri asked a relevant question, but those who answered did not stay on topic. But this is where it started YESTERDAY, and this time, the aftermath has swelled.

A new thread has already emerged. So, let me throw Uncle’s fresh suggestion in here too:

MasseForum Noble

Uncle Masse has been watching this fresh youthful frolic with a little concern and reiterates his earlier suggestion to the village constable:

Let’s remove the entire flagging system as it’s unnecessary, and replace it with the good old upvote-downvote system  Everyone gets to express their opinion on a post, and if there are clearly more downvotes than upvotes (e.g., 70%), then the village constable takes the post under consideration and first gives the writer a warning, then a second warning, and then directs the writer to familiarize themselves with Indere’s floor 000. At least for a while.

By doing this, no single person blocks another, and no one gets angry about a single flag, but the community decides if the post was below par.

Uncle Masse, FA, age brings wisdom and even unnecessary passion fades away :ok_hand: :ok_hand: :ok_hand:

You probably shouldn’t change that, because there’s already a like system here. If we want to change it in that direction, we should probably just state that it requires x number of flaggers for a flag to be executed. It already does, but I guess it could be modified.

It’s worth noting that the number of flags changes as the forum grows and depending on the size of the discussion thread. In the most popular threads, flags are gathered more easily than in some small company threads read by 10 people

It’s very difficult to optimize the system with the required number of flags to suit everyone

Yes, Antti and Verneri will make sure that flagging here isn’t done just for fun. As the community grows, we can’t “turn a blind eye” to certain people’s messages – the screening has to be equal for everyone. (Rules) If your message is flagged, you should critically consider why that happened. There’s no need to get upset about it. I have nothing else to add.

If you read the FuelCell thread from Meri’s first message up to the point where the discussion completely turned into flagging, but don’t read the flagged messages, you won’t miss any important content related to FuelCell. So doesn’t this flagging system work exactly as it should in this situation, i.e., it removes unnecessary messages from view and keeps the forum more focused on relevant content.

I’m interested in how many flags are actually needed for a post to be marked as flagged? I couldn’t find this information in any of the rules, or am I just a middle-aged stick-in-the-mud

I admit on my part that some of my posts on the FuelCell forum probably didn’t produce much new content, but my sincere intention was to generally keep the discussion going on the topic.

Given that there hadn’t been a single post in 12 days in that particular discussion, I also saw no reason to maintain radio silence.

Hey @NEA,

Such a feature exists in the service. You can go to a person’s profile and either ignore or mute the profile:

It can also be found in the settings. There are surprisingly many good features here that you might not notice if you don’t specifically go looking for them. In my opinion, this is not a replacement for flagging, because flagging makes the forum a better place for everyone, whereas using the ignore list only improves your own experience.

Yeah, but if this shitstorm is coming again in the future, I’d rather start using the ignore function.

I’ll tell you how I ended up flagging. Let me start by saying that I don’t support the flagging practice myself. The flagging practice should be stopped immediately or reformed. However, I have noticed that flagging is an important part of the forum’s toolkit, with which you, as a regular user, can control and exert power.

I didn’t flag at all before, and I didn’t even really know about this possibility. One day, one of our distinguished users came to tell me that he had made his first flag and had been rewarded with a merit badge for it. Before that, I had one angry flag on my record and, being a conscientious person, I felt a great sense of guilt about it. Alcohol had played a small part in it at the time.

And before long, my first flag had already been waved at a newcomer, and a new medal as a reward for my effort. I felt empowered. I adopted the motto: Flag or be flagged.

Previously, I participated in discussions according to my skills and interests. Mostly, I read the news feed on renewables and linked some news with short explanations. I also posted a few tips about the corona dip, etc. Thanks to everyone for the excellent posts. It has been nice to read the discussions and learn a lot of new things for my investment decisions, etc. Several times now, when participating in a discussion, I have had to apologize for a zero-post, for example, an additional question about the matter or speculation about a price increase or decrease. I have also deleted messages afterwards to avoid a flag. Sometimes you just want to ask experts a zero-post that is important to me, but the forum starts raging about zero-posts.

Flags are never independent. Fortunately, I have friends here on the forum whom I never flag, but instead go and give a thumbs up. They are an important inner circle for me for information gathering. I am loyal to them.

Dear gurus, think about whether you get the respect you deserve here for your selfless work. I claim that you will never get it. Your voluntary contribution is not appreciated here. You just get teased if you ever throw in a slightly lighter comment. On behalf of the forum, thank you and sorry. Let’s stop this flagging nonsense immediately.

I am of the opinion that the esteemed hydrogen/renewables gurus should break away into their own cell! Let’s open Finland’s first new forum specifically for that topic, where we respect each other and trust the group members, and the discussion is still relaxed and freer. Let’s make money together with good investment ideas. I don’t believe that advertising, financing, and expertise will be an issue. :cowboy_hat_face:

When can one ask questions without fear of being flagged?

Feel free to ask questions, even warm ones; there’s a dedicated thread for them.

I’m puzzled by this constant discussion about what the forum should offer, what kind of content should be accepted there, and how user activity should / would be desirable to control, if at all.

Of course, development suggestions are certainly welcome, but the recent complaining, aggressive, and demanding tone is, in my opinion, completely inappropriate.

I already wrote about this same topic yesterday.

This is not your sandbox, nor is it my sandbox. This is not Ylilauta, Suomi24, 4chan, or Riemurasia. This is a completely free service offered to us by a domestic company, Inderes.

If you are unable or unwilling to comply with the terms and conditions for its use, you are in the wrong place.

Whether your reason is attention-seeking, thin-skinnedness, arrogance, or anything else, if you cannot play by the given rules, try to do enough to not spoil the game for others.

You’re probably referring to the already-removed “wank ring” and “leave the forum, don’t discuss stocks, etc.” flaggers, who indeed disrupt discussions and prevent us from even seeing the outcome of the discussion.

So, do you have any suggestions, or do you want to concretely state what you want?

Most people understand very well that this is a discussion forum about investing. We are discussing investing, we do not prefer to flag or discuss flagging.

The result of the poll above clearly shows that over half consider unnecessary flagging disruptive, and even if only 20% thought so, conclusions should be drawn from that too.

Those who oppose the flagging policy seem to be mostly those whose posts are constantly being flagged. In my opinion, they should look in the mirror rather than criticize others for flagging.

Nowadays, you see quite a bit of people writing in clear off-topic messages, “someone will probably flag this too.” Then, they complain that someone flagged that message. A small cooling-off period would be in order sometimes if they just can’t learn to follow the forum rules. It’s better to just focus on reading for a while.
