Pörssipäivä is, in my opinion, the best podcast focusing on investing and economic phenomena. Hosted by Mikko Jylhä, the program has for years offered its listeners in-depth, independent, and expert discussions on economics and investing. It is the oldest and most versatile economics podcast, published on Thursdays: Pörssipäivä | Yle Areena. Weekly, Pörssipäivä brings a studio full of experts, investors, and analysts to discuss current topics – without an advertising-funded agenda or superficial treatment.
Today I read sad news. Pörssipäivä will be discontinued as part of Yle’s cost-saving measures. This is a huge loss for Finnish economic discussion and the investor community. Independent and in-depth economic journalism is especially important at a time when information is fragmented and many get their information from commercial or one-sided sources.
The disappearance of Pörssipäivä would leave a large void in quality economic discussion. Could Yle still be appealed to and asked to reconsider the discontinuation of the program? Do citizens have any means to influence this decision?
If you value independent and expert economic journalism, now would be the time to act.
It would be important for Finns to be offered as diverse and independent economic information as possible, as understanding economics and investing directly affects all our lives. Good economic literacy:
- Helps make better decisions – Whether it’s about saving, taking out a loan, or investing, a lack of economic knowledge can lead to costly mistakes.
- Reduces economic inequality – Independent and expert economic journalism helps everyone, not just those who already have a lot of knowledge or wealth.
- Strengthens democracy – The economy affects politics and our society, and without quality economic discussion, the backgrounds of decisions easily remain obscure.
- Develops Finnish investment culture – We still have a way to go before investing is widely seen as a civic skill. Without reliable information, fewer and fewer dare to get involved.
