If you know better than the market when the share price is too high, then you sell those shares. If a company is buying back its own shares, that relative cheapness or expensiveness has no significance as long as you can and get to decide for yourself when you buy or sell. And I assume you do get to decide.
So, it’s not paying a steep price, but rather that price has no significance whatsoever.
