NoHo Partners - Capital allocator in the restaurant industry

However, there were still about 5.4 million units left, so I don’t personally interpret this sale as very worrying yet

Behind a paywall, but reportedly the lease agreement ended and the building is planned to be demolished. NoHo’s nightclub.

This question perhaps belongs in the Coffee Room due to its theme, but NoHo’s heavily marketed “Sisäpiiri” (Insider) event was yesterday, on which the company spent an absolute hell of a lot of money and goodwill. So, was the event a hit or a flop?

It depends on what one is looking for from it. It was a promotional event after all. I believe that participants will feel more warmly towards the company and will eat there more often and perhaps recommend it to their friends, it will raise its esteem among graduates receiving scholarships, it was a new experience for the chefs to arrange portions for such a large number (over 200), etc., but I would have said even before attending that the intention was probably to organize something nice. The event itself was really great, but whether it was a good investment for the company, I don’t know, but they probably weren’t aiming for that anyway.

Personally, it was cool to see the stock exchange building, as I hadn’t been there before. It’s always interesting to put faces to things, in this case, to see the company’s management and shareholders (you could get the same by attending a general meeting, though not quite in the same way). A four-course dinner with cocktail receptions. Some probably had a bit more champagne, and I don’t know if there was still an open bar at the end. I had other obligations, so I couldn’t stay until midnight in the middle of the week, or however long it continued. The company’s operations or future weren’t really discussed there, but rather its history up to that point, in a more narrative way.

I don’t know if this answered the question. Can be moved to the coffee room.

Here are Tomi Lahti’s, also known as Zijoittaja’s, impressions from the event.

Tomi is an incredibly good social media content creator - many younger ones come in second to him. I almost wrote ‘number two’, but there’s nothing wrong with Kyösti either. :cowboy_hat_face:

It will be interesting to see how much the warmer summer weather is reflected in NoHo’s figures in the upcoming announcements. :chart_increasing: :chart_decreasing:

The parties sounded great, and I’m sorry I couldn’t make it. Can anyone tell me what the program’s surprise was?

They raffled off a few gift cards.

To avoid it being completely content-less, the chairman suggested that Helsinki could accommodate a finer Asian restaurant that would transform into a slightly different style over the course of the evening. Like a DJ playing, etc. Such concepts have reportedly been successfully launched globally, so why not here too. At least I interpreted that something like this might be under consideration, but of course, one restaurant doesn’t really move the needle much one way or another.

I must say that the event was handled in a truly professional manner. The catering was top-notch, the program well-planned, the staff acted in all situations like in Michelin* restaurants, and NoHo representatives were nicely distributed among different tables to chat with participants. My table neighbors also happened to be very pleasant people, so I can only say a big thank you to NoHo for a truly successful evening!

P.S. After seeing the menu, I complained a bit that the Shinobi dish I was most interested in was a dessert and not a savory dish. After eating the dessert, I no longer regretted it, as that particular dish was the star of the evening. A picture of the dish is further up in Zijoittaja’s posts. I definitely have to go and try Shinobi’s other offerings sometime on a weekend.

Similar thoughts here! I already responded to the feedback survey with words of praise, but let’s also put greetings and thanks to NoHo’s staff here! A great event, excellent and very generous catering, good atmosphere, and interesting speeches. Seating management team members randomly among other guests was also a great idea!

We also got pleasant, previously unknown table companions, and the conversation flowed better and better, especially as the catering progressed

Indeed, this kind of investor relations maintenance is something to be applauded!

According to what I’ve heard, Noho would be opening a new nightclub in the premises of the former Heidi’s BierBar in Oulu. I believe they will go with the same concept as Noho’s recently opened Sin City in Tampere, which was also made in the premises of the former Heidi’s.

In my opinion, this is a somewhat challenging phenomenon for the future of the nightclub business. I have noticed the rise of these so-called UG parties in my own social circle since 2020, when this phenomenon really took off in Finland due to the corona pandemic, and there are no signs of it fading.

Fresh data from Statistics Finland on service industries arrived this morning. Turnover in accommodation and food service activities grew by 1.7% in August compared to last year. In July, growth was as high as 4.2% due to the heatwaves. In terms of volume, for the Q3 months, we are only slightly (or at the same level) ahead of last year.

Thanks to Sanna. I would have gladly participated in the event. It’s hard to say how one could get into a similar event, as mail delivery speeds vary for everyone. Perhaps direct registration via email would be an immediate opportunity for everyone, as the invitation would arrive at the same moment for everyone. I’m not criticizing our excellent company – you do your best. In any case, we will see each other again in Tampere at an excellent general meeting. Thanks in advance for that.

In Tamperelainen, there is a story about Teemu Aaltonen, who gave up running the Koskikeskus nightclubs early this year, when they were fully transferred to NoHo. NoHo also gave them up later.

Nowadays, people get drunk at home and don’t even go to nightclubs. The decline of nightclubs is an international trend. Trends can change, but not necessarily in my lifetime.

NoHo has stated that there are winners and losers in the nightclub business. In almost every locality with nightclubs, only the most attractive unit makes a profit. NoHo aims to be the best in each area.

As you may have noticed, NoHo has expanded its selection to include pub and juice bar operations, so the company is keeping up with the times. This allows them to cater to a broader demographic according to their needs.

From the street view, I noticed Cheri was dark, and indeed they closed a couple of weeks ago. It probably partly affected that a couple of new French restaurants with a similar vibe opened on the other side of the street.

Openings will likely keep busy in the future too, with something coming to Haapasalo’s Purpur (Purpurin) space already “this autumn”. Hopefully, something functional will be found for Cheri’s space; it’s probably not the cheapest square footage in the city. Additionally, on Espa, there’s already one space “subleased” to a Michelin guy & The Room restaurant.

In itself, this is business as usual, but these certainly consume a lot of cash flow - in addition to the openings in Tampere and Oulu and the corporate acquisitions (previously discussed in the chain).

NoHo, as a large chain, operates rationally; if one of its restaurants isn’t performing, it’s closed down. It’s important to note the difference that the media usually reports on the closure of an individual restaurant. Especially if it has been a so-called fine dining restaurant with celebrity chefs. For these, of course, it has been a disaster. In NoHo’s case, it’s about evaluating a single unit – whether it’s profitable enough. As an industry giant, NoHo dominates in terms of raw materials and staff with a significant scale advantage compared to individual or small-chain restaurant operators. That’s why NoHo succeeds despite consumers’ weakened purchasing power.
