Q&A on Investing

Sometimes there are small things one would like to ask about, but a suitable thread might not be found, or it doesn’t make sense to create one for a single question. I thought that in this thread, forum members could ask their own questions and answer others’ problems between heaven and earth.

However, I’ll start with a stock market-related topic:
-Is it possible to see more buy&sell levels than the 5 that all brokers usually offer? Is it possible to see more for free or even by paying for some service?

Hey, great start! I also added “about investing” to the end of the title so it stays (maybe) clearer on the topic

In an IPO, you don’t always get as many shares as you wanted.
Can an individual somehow make more than one subscription commitment in an IPO?
Often, these IPOs have a minimum number of shares that they try to guarantee, and with multiple subscriptions, one could increase this minimum.
It is probably possible to subscribe in one’s own name and in the name of a company one owns, but what about those who don’t have a company? Of course, using nominees is one way, but is there a more honest option?

One question came to mind that probably fits this thread quite well: Do you find it annoying if someone states their position size, for example, when posting in the “I just bought and sold” thread? I’ve been thinking about my own posts; my main agenda is to usually disclose the position size because I largely don’t hide any part of my investment decisions. This way, other readers of this forum can infer whether the investment in question is sensible or not, and potentially use this information to help them find their own perspectives

It doesn’t annoy me, at least. On the contrary, it’s quite nice to hear what strategy everyone is using. However, I don’t like to open up about my own matters in too much detail. It’s entirely up to the individual whether they want to disclose their own position, but I guess everyone is interested in what others are doing nonetheless

Thanks @terva_xyz for the perspective! Good to hear it doesn’t bother you too much

Hey, it doesn’t bother me either; quite the opposite, it’s really nice to see that whether it’s @Pika-Sissi’s (Pika-Sissi) investment pot or @Johannes_Sippola’s (Johannes Sippola) Sampo pot, they have invested so heavily in the company  It gives a unique perspective, and maybe a little spark → ‘I could have a pot like that in 30 years’

After all, even the analysts here have invested big money in the companies they follow

Personally, I don’t mind the disclosure of position sizes if the writer wants to do so… as long as it’s done in a constructive spirit. However, if money is discussed in terms of earned euros, portfolio euros, etc., there is a certain risk of envy arising due to human nature and Finnish characteristics. In this case, the spirit of the forum would become closer to KL’s discussion forum. I would not want this.

One solution could be to create a discussion thread “Let’s dissect our portfolios (€)”, where each willing participant could discuss their portfolio’s euros, risks, views, etc. In this case, there would be no “compulsion” to record anything about euros in the “buy-sell” thread or company-specific threads.

Last time I spoke with Nasdaq and inquired about live stock prices, they only offered 1 or 5 bid levels. I have the impression that the exchange doesn’t offer more data on bid levels. I might be wrong.

Dear Johannes: Uncle likes it when the youth play with real stakes. This beautifully fulfills the entertainment component of investing.

Have fun playing. I hope your head and position can withstand it.

Why do Nordnet’s buy & sell levels update at 6:25 PM showing only one level for each? One would think all levels would be visible until 6:30 PM.

Final auction begins at 18:25

So how does the closing auction actually work in practice? I couldn’t find a clear explanation in plain Finnish right now. I understand the opening auction and how it determines the day’s opening price, but the significance of the closing auction is unclear. Why can’t the closing price simply be the price of the last trade of the day?

Strange. So far, I’ve heard from other parties that their collateral calculations were 60-70% for Finnish stocks and 50% for foreign stocks. But there hasn’t been such a precise distinction. They probably took volatility into account, and perhaps something else. Does anyone know?

Couldn’t the opening price, by the same logic, be the first trade executed during normal trading hours?

Thanks to the closing auction, no one can manipulate the price upwards with just a small trade. I’m not sure if the auction has any significant benefit, but it doesn’t hurt either.

One would imagine that this would be one of the biggest reasons for a closing auction. Generally, when looking at daily prices, the day’s price is specifically the closing price, which gives the closing price a larger role than, for example, the opening price. What’s a bit odd about it is that the closing auction’s trading volume can be a large part of the day’s total volume.

Hi Johannes! No, it’s not annoying.

I personally prefer to be a bit more abstract with my bets, kind of like public companies, using terms like “small,” “initial stake,” “base amount,” “significant,” “super powerful stake” for my investments. So, if Talenom and Nokia are the biggest (maybe “significant” in this context) and something like Innofactor (already sold) or Remeny are tiny  it mostly reflects the kind of risk I want to take with different stocks.

If someone has followed more closely, they can probably deduce what those terms roughly mean :).

It’s really nice that you share your thoughts and practice and develop; at the same time, these things give others something to think about too.

I think this forum is awesome anyway, with so many people gathered around the same topic. I hope it stays enjoyable in the future.

Stakes are probably set according to available funds, right? People probably have slightly different perspectives and life situations. I think it affects things, for example, if the portfolio size grows, the risk-taking ability might decrease a bit.

That turned into a long post; I’m not going to read through what I wrote

Thanks, @viljo, for the answer. This is largely what I’m aiming for: to improve myself and for others to consider my investment decisions from their own perspectives as they wish! I fully agree; this forum is simply excellent, and we also shouldn’t forget Inderes’ analyses, which are more valuable than gold!

In a way, perhaps also, if serious mistakes occur, by writing about them here, you review them, so bad investment decisions don’t make it to the stock market, as you process them while writing here, e.g., in the “I just bought/sold” thread  It would be very good to keep emotions completely out of play when trading in the stock market.

Yeah, the hardest part is admitting mistakes, but that’s exactly what you should do. At least to yourself.
