FuelCell Energy

FuelCell’s end of the year was strong in terms of revenue, but largely thanks to old deliveries that were already known. Cost discipline has clearly improved, but the fundamental problem has not disappeared, meaning products are still being sold at a loss. The cash position is in good shape, but money and time are being spent on managing low-margin contracts while a new growth story is being built.

Savings and cash provide security, but on the other hand, where are the profitable orders? The old backlog is depleting, where will profitable growth come from…

FuelCell Energy stock rose after announcing a collaboration with SDCL.

The companies are exploring whether fuel cells could generate up to 450 megawatts of power for data centers across the globe. This is driven, of course, by the growing electricity needs of AI.

Fuel cells can provide steady on-site power and reduce local emissions.

FuelCell Energy’s revenue grew strongly—on the other hand, it fell short of expectations, and there is still work to be done, especially on the earnings side.

The growth was mainly driven by service deliveries in South Korea, and the company’s core business does not yet appear capable of delivering sustainable profitability.

Management highlighted the significant opportunities presented by AI data centers, and the company spoke of a strong pipeline, but this is not yet reflected in binding orders, for instance. They have cash on hand.

The most essential thing is likely getting the operations gradually onto a sustainable growth path.

FuelCell Energy missed expectations in both revenue and earnings. Revenue decreased slightly compared to the previous year, primarily due to a decline in service and generation revenues. The actual net loss decreased significantly, which was largely influenced by a massive impairment charge related to a failed power plant project in the prior period.

Well, EBITDA improved from the previous year thanks to cost-saving measures.
