Series and Movies - Entertainment for the Darkness

I happened to stumble upon and watch a somewhat different miniseries. Sentenced to Treatment | Yle Areena

Danish documentarian Anders Agger gets a rare visit to Denmark’s most strictly guarded prison psychiatric hospital. He meets and interviews four “real-life Hannibal Lecters” and delves into their situations. The encounters are at times quite chilling. The prisoners/patients are heavily medicated in these situations, and some of them truly do not understand at all why they have been put behind bars.

At least for me, the program evoked strong emotions at times. Partly because I immensely appreciate the work of the nursing staff in a violent environment, and partly because some of the thoughts of these prisoners were indeed eye-opening.

The program does not discuss the crimes committed by these individuals, but generally speaking, these are violent crimes committed without understanding. The severity of these can be reflected upon when observing the extensive security arrangements. Especially the patient introduced at the beginning of the program, who masters several martial arts, is truly a frightening sight even when medicated. Furthermore, all interviewees naturally appear only on their “better days,” which makes one wonder what the worse days are like, especially for the staff. This is also referred to, laconically and factually.

Hope is also offered. During the four episodes, there is a change in the patients’ condition, some for the better, some for the worse. Especially the seemingly energetic guy who goes to the gym and is upset about his isolation improves remarkably in his demeanor, though the permanence of the change is unknown.

All in all, a worthwhile, somewhat heavier piece. I recommend it.

Something here after a long time. On Netflix, the ‘Gentlemen’ miniseries. A prime example of how when everything goes wrong/sideways, it really goes wrong. Perhaps suitable viewing for a ‘Hesuli’ investor..

Oh right, I went to see a movie about the beginning of Bruce Springsteen’s career. Thumbs relatively sideways on that one.

Good old The Terminator (1984) on Areena. :robot: :sunglasses:

From Netflix, the story of Ed Gein, the best Netflix original series I’ve watched.

As the name suggests, it tells about the gentleman in question and his terrible deeds, but also the good things he managed to do before his death, based on true events. At times, the series contains quite sick stuff, but nothing overwhelming.

You can watch the series quickly as there are only eight episodes, don’t judge it based on the beginning! The series starts slowly and might feel a bit confusing, but it gets better towards the end, and the last couple of episodes felt like watching a completely different series.

Also worth noting is that the main role is played by Charlie Hunnam, known from the Sons of Anarchy series, among others. This was a very different role performance, and he played this role incredibly well

Landman is getting a second season this month. The first season was at least to my liking and will probably go into my top 5 series :folded_hands:

Inspired by the previous message (I don’t have an active Netflix subscription, so I can’t comment on NuoriKissa’s series, and I couldn’t even find it when I tried searching IMDb/Google) but related to the same genre is SkyShowtime’s recent miniseries about John Wayne Gacy (6/8 episodes available to watch)… an incredible character and an interesting series for dark-minded people like me. Highly recommended! Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy (TV Mini Series 2025) - IMDb

I watched the first season and it’s a pretty decent series, but I wouldn’t put it in my top 5. However, I will watch the second season when it comes out. On the same service (SkyShowtime), I was surprised that I managed to watch the Tulsa King series; since I’ve been to Tulsa, it made me curious about the series (I’m not a Stallone type). The first and second seasons were quite watchable, but the third season has been a bit slower (I think 5 episodes are available). I’ll finish it when I have more time, as I have so much going on right now. I just finished Under The Banner of Heaven, 2022 (Disney+), which is based on true events and also recounts the history of Mormons.

Edit: I corrected that memory lapse; the third season is already ongoing, not the second as I wrote in my original message, and 8/10 episodes are available (new episodes on Thursdays).

I subscribed to Disney+ for the first time when I noticed the promotional pricing at the end of September, and I’m really positively surprised by how much good content my dark mind has found there, and at this rate, I intend to continue the subscription even after the promotional period ends. Today I finished a four-part miniseries: Suspect - The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, a tragedy based on true events. A warm recommendation for viewing, though not suitable for the most sensitive viewers. Happy Sunday. Now to sports…first the golf season finale in Europe and then American football :american_football: for the rest of the day :eyes:

Still a couple more days for HBO Max at €3.49/month for 12 months. The weakness of the pricing is ‘with Ads’. No experience yet how annoying a feature it is.

Including True Detective, and of course much more.

I have seen the latest Unknown Soldier as a movie a couple of times.

Now I watched it as a series too, which has a total duration of about four hours. It was definitely worth watching, but if you’ve just seen the movie, I wouldn’t watch this series right after. The movie, at the time, exceeded my expectations in many ways, e.g., it was genuinely touching and realistic, and the acting performances were superb, especially Eero Aho’s (Rokka).

The Unknown Soldier series contains material not seen in the movie version and gives space to the characters and people’s feelings on both the front and home fronts.

A real-life documentary like this immediately piqued my interest. I opened Areena, and here I am watching it. Thanks for the tip

Edit: After watching this for 15 minutes, a question definitely comes to mind: why do we as a society keep individuals like this in any kind of care? None of them can return to normal society in any way, and without 24/7 guarding, they would only cause immense suffering to their fellow human beings. Sometimes a humane act would be something else entirely than prolonging their and our agony. Even one man seems to be guarded by seven people just so he can leave his own room.

I take that Connery look with me from one costume party to the next, no matter the theme. So anyway… the movie Zardoz is available for everyone to watch on Areena right now, just as a tip.

An ambitious vision of the future and a cult film about a brutal barbarian from the 23rd century who encounters the wonderful, abundant world of the civilized and immortal. Starring Sean Connery and Charlotte Rampling. Directed by John Boorman. (UK 1974)

Highly recommend Jaakko Keso’s documentary series Tämä on Amerikka (This is America)!

Especially its second season, with its road-trip style and down-to-earth approach, is really interesting in my opinion. The series provides the viewer with a wide range of grassroots American perspectives on the state of the country, its division, Trump, etc.

Watch Our Planet. True to its name, it is an absolutely incredible documentary series about our Earth, its biodiversity, and its animals. You can’t praise this enough; it’s a truly mesmerizing series. At the same time, it gives everyone something to think about and serves as a small reminder that there are other species on this planet besides just humans.

It’s available on Netflix, but all episodes are also available to watch for free on Netflix’s YouTube channel! Released in 2019 and narrated by the legendary Sir David Attenborough. And hey, BTW, the guy turns 100 in May.

Just finished watching the miniseries based on true events on Disney+: Dopesick (2021, 8 episodes), and I highly recommend this one as well; it’s a hard-hitting story about the villains of the opioid pharmaceutical world (Purdue Pharma). Now I’m looking forward to Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere (2025), coming Jan 23 (Friday).

If you haven’t checked them out yet, almost all other nature shows with an 8.0+ rating narrated by this gentleman are worth adding to your watchlist. Especially the most famous Planet Earth series are breathtaking to watch, just like the one you mentioned. Good lord, the soul really finds peace while watching stuff like that.

It was good that you reminded me of this. These days I’m quite selective about what I watch, but these usually have a rock-solid guarantee of quality, and even the weaker moments are so good that I’ve never regretted watching them. On my own watchlist for nature shows, I’ll be adding Kingdom, Parenthood, Mammals, Asia, A Perfect Planet, Dynasties, and Africa.

Regarding other series, I recently watched the first season of Pluribus, which, despite its potential, high expectations, and a good opening, turned out to be subpar in places. It reminded me of another B-list sci-fi series, Silo, where the story is also interesting, but the plot moves like molasses. In these, the quality of individual episodes just isn’t nearly enough to justify stretching out an interesting main story in that manner.

Yesterday I watched the first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and it was just a beautiful vibe. Even though this will likely move even slower than molasses (which doesn’t matter at all if it works), the world of Westeros just keeps you hooked. The music was really pretty. There is potential, but after the main series completely blew it at the end, expectations aren’t very high, and apart from the music and atmosphere, there wasn’t much to take away yet.

I also watched a couple of episodes of the hospital series The Pitt. I’m not a fan of that genre at all, but I’m definitely going to watch that to the end. Top-tier quality, at least so far.

Severance must be mentioned among these newer ones. Mostly a top-tier series, although there are some surprisingly weak episodes in between. However, the story here keeps you engaged well enough, unlike the couple mentioned earlier.

The second season of The Last of Us was really poor compared to expectations, except for a few bright spots. Even the number of episodes had dropped to seven, which at that pace made for a really miserable overall package. Maybe the third season will save it someday…

On the other hand, Dexter: Resurrection was a total surprise in the opposite direction. Whereas the main series went completely south at the end (as did New Blood), this one had a solid star cast, and the pace was so to speak top-notch from start to finish, even regarding the script.

Arcane, Shogun, and Invincible are still waiting in the queue. I’ve already watched a few episodes of the first one, and I’ve really liked it. I should explore the world of animation even more. Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga were probably the last ones I watched, and they were quite a ride.

A new season of Modern Men has been released (already the fifth), this series is about men like me.

The series is really engaging and at least I have been laughing out loud.

Matti (Iikka Forss), Pete (Jarkko Niemi), Tuomas (Tommi Rantamäki), Jarkko (seasons 1-3, Eero Milonoff) and Mika (seasons 4-5, Mikko Töyssy) struggle with the modern world and solve the tricky challenges of contemporary manhood. Fargo is also available on Netflix. And if you want to watch the series’ events in chronological order, watch season 2 first and only then season 1. It’s worth checking out this series if you’ve missed it.
