Metacritic started with a score of 69/100, but we are waiting for more reviews to come in.

And then Firebreak goes for a trial.

Note on pricing, FBC: Firebreak is a few euros cheaper on the Epic Store than the Steam release (35,90€ vs. 39,90€): https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/fbc-firebreak-fc3830

Remedy’s share is probably the same on both platforms, however.

Finally, we also got a marketing video that is closer to the Remedy that is expected from the studio:

On Twitch, about 2000 viewers at launch; if you check Twitch’s pages, it’s around ~2500.

Seems mediocre..

Is the next Inderes analysis titled in the familiar style “we are playing the long game”?

Will FBC’s valuations still find a savior, a surprising final sprint, or awards in the autumn?

Where is @Pohjolan_Eka’s cash flow with its critiques?

Will FBC be found in the discount bin after Midsummer?

So much to look forward to again

A connection problem has already occurred three times.. I was able to play the first couple of jobs without issues. Apparently, the number of players has grown a bit.

The game has, however, climbed its way into the top 10 of Steam’s Global Top Sellers list despite being available on subscription services. And workdays are just starting for Americans, so it will surely get more traffic. I am cautiously optimistic that the subscription service deal has sufficiently mitigated risks and there is a strong overreaction in the stock market. The Opencritic rating also updated to Strong in the meantime.

First 1000 reached on SteamDB, and constantly rising. It should reach pretty good numbers initially, once people in Europe get off work and people in the US wake up. It’s another matter how long those player numbers can be maintained.

Over 5k viewers on Twitch now after an hour.

My quick initial comments are that the gameplay is generally at an okay level. The gunplay has been clearly improved. There’s quite a steep learning curve at first, and I’ve had to play some missions alone, which makes it even more challenging when weapons and other equipment are at a low level.

A negative point is that if you only try this casually, there’s a high chance that games will end within the first hour for this reason. If you manage to push through this, it’s quite playable.

I watched a stream for fifteen minutes where two players were destroying Post-it notes. One tried to wet them with a water gun and the other then shot electricity at the ground. Occasionally, zombies attacked, which were defeated with a couple of shots. Nothing interesting happened, and the players wondered if there was more content in this game, because the activity quickly became quite boring. Someone compared the game to a multiplayer version of Viscera Cleanup Detail

The gameplay looks exactly as generic as one might have expected from previous materials. It’s unlikely this game will become a viral hit with these demonstrations, as one can’t even bear to watch it, let alone play it, even if it were free. On the positive side, the development costs have already been paid, and all cash flow from the game will be profit, even if sales turn out to be poor.

Yep. Below average. I personally can’t find a reason why I would ever (again?) launch this. Kits are a fun gimmick, but they’re not needed for anything. You just grab a gun and shoot. Enemies are soulless, odorless, tasteless, and slow weapons just get annoying. Additionally, even if you crank up the difficulty, it didn’t feel particularly difficult for our group, at least.

Somehow, it lacks “player agency” as I couldn’t describe the term better. I have no reason to do the things you’re supposed to do in the game. Compare it to PAYDAY where missions have all sorts of interesting things to find and challenges, or Deep Rock Galactic where progression feels like progression and every character class is needed.

In a couple of hours, we’ve gone through almost all the content, and 40€
phew, oh dear. Still managed to get a refund.

Steam also delivered a death sentence with its preliminary user rating:

If anyone is still wondering why this wasn’t marketed, the reviews tell the reason. They at Remedy knew that this was a weak B-tier Game Pass game. There’s no point in pouring money into marketing. Take the sure money and minimize the damages. Negative signals from testing and previews strongly indicated the quality.

First of all, I have previous experience with games in the FBC: Firebreak genre, especially Left 4 Dead 2, which I’ve played quite a bit over the years.

Some first impressions based on about an hour of gameplay.

  • The missions seem quite interesting (except for destroying post-it notes; when that mission started, I wondered aloud, “Do I really have to shoot yellow notes?!”). I’m not yet convinced that the “gameplay loop” is engaging enough for many players.
  • The enemies don’t feel exciting. There’s a reason why games like this usually focus on fighting zombies. Shooting Hiss enemies quickly becomes boring because they don’t feel very interesting.
  • Some of the weapons feel too much like pea shooters; perhaps the sound design could be improved in that regard.

Since my first impression was like this, it’s hard to see the game becoming a big sales success. It left a bit of a “Left 4 Dead from Temu” vibe. Sending a refund request already crossed my mind, but I’ll try it a bit longer to see if later missions are more interesting. Most likely, it will go to a refund.

I still need to mention this so that there isn’t a wrong impression of the game’s functionality. I now have a little over 2 hours of playtime, and these connection issues haven’t occurred anymore
They appeared three times within 30 minutes of launch, and now it has been stable gaming.

As someone who has played for 40 years, starting with the Vic-20, I watched that demo back then and it left me with a feeling that I wouldn’t watch any more. Those Post-it notes, well, I don’t know if it will appeal to Americans, given that there are dumber people there, but I think it could inspire children.
It’s a shame, really, as I myself own a reasonably large slice of Remedy, but if this was just a momentary flop and we focus on better projects. I can’t understand who came up with such an idea, but of course I’m not a professional in the field, nor do I research what interests people. I even forced myself to play Control through, as those floating types in the air weren’t to my liking, and there wasn’t really anything good in the game for me other than the shooting system, which was then really good and kept me playing.

My taste is, of course, more like Assassins Greed, GTA, RDR II, Elden Ring, etc.

Wow, FBC is one of the biggest Nordic flops of all time. €30M budget with 3 million copies to go break-even and no-one is playing (<2000 CCU). This will be a €20m+ loss for the company and proves that they are not in touch with their player base and cannot make multiplayer games. 35% positive reviews on Steam right now, wow!

Now that it seems quite clear that the game will flop, it’s worth bringing up the scenario where the game has to be completely pulled from the market and Remedy has to refund players who paid for it.

Maintaining game servers is also not free, and if the player count falls short of expectations, running costs must be quickly eliminated. The company could, of course, try to re-release the game as a free-to-play version, but based on reviews and player feedback, even this would not save the situation.

While we determine the best path ahead, Concord sales will cease immediately and we will begin to offer a full refund for all gamers who have purchased the game for PS5 or PC. If you purchased the game for PlayStation 5 from the PlayStation Store or PlayStation Direct, a refund will be issued back to your original payment method.
