U.S. reaches deal to keep Chinese telecom ZTE in business: congressional aide

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration told lawmakers the U.S. government has reached a deal to put Chinese telecommunications company ZTE Corp back in business, a senior congressional aide said on Friday.
The deal, communicated to officials on Capitol Hill by the Commerce Department, requires ZTE to pay a substantial fine, place U.S. compliance officers at the company and change its management team, the aide said. The Commerce Department would then lift an order preventing ZTE from buying U.S. products.

ZTE was banned in April from buying U.S. technology components for seven years for breaking an agreement reached after it violated U.S. sanctions against Iran and North Korea. The Commerce Department decision would allow it to resume business with U.S. companies, including chipmaker Qualcomm Inc.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday floated a plan to fine ZTE up to $1.3 billion and shake up its management as his administration considered rolling back more severe penalties that have crippled the company.

The White House did not immediately confirm reports of the latest deal.

Now figure out what we’ll end up with…

Hopefully the money lost on Withings has been “recovered”.

This morning, I remembered this video where Mikael goes through Nokia’s big picture and how the company is positioned in the 5G revolution. Still relevant, the stock was bottoming out at four euros back then, which added extra excitement about whether the bet would go completely wrong Nokia sijoituskohteena ja yhtiön iso kuva - Inderes

Hi,
Could I get Inderes’ comments regarding Nokia’s annual general meeting and its outcome, please?

We didn’t have anyone participating. I heard from those who went that a rather long Q&A session was held..

Quite an interesting story reported in today’s morning review about Huawei potentially being forced out of the Australian 5G market…

That’s a very interesting situation. Who among these four: Nokia, Ericsson, ZTE, and Huawei, leads in technology? Or are they all on the same level, having copied each other?

Telecom operators keep cutting, cutting, and cutting http://www.lightreading.com/business-employment/jobs/big-telcos-have-slashed-107k-jobs-since-2015/d/d-id/743765?page_number=1. This is not directly related to 5G investments, but it illustrates how operators are looking for cost-saving solutions everywhere.

Around 90% of Nokia’s (Nokia) revenue comes from operators.

I haven’t even tried to analyze Nokia in more depth on my own. There’s so much good, ready-made professional analysis available that there’s no point in spending my own time on this case. However, around the turn of the year, I bought a couple of batches at an average price of 4.06e, as there seemed to be a confusing amount of bad news baked into the share price, yet in a sector that is expected to recover in the near future.

Right now, my purchase decision looks pretty good, but I’m sure there will still be sharp movements in the share price at least. It’s already tingling a bit, how much substance will ultimately be found in Suri’s H2 speeches. If there are more disappointments, there will be a lot of downward leverage again. However, I personally believe that the market will be able to add another feather to Suri’s cap of trust.

It’s hard to say anything about 5G without experiencing it, but my gut feeling is that it’s something you can’t really afford not to invest in. And then it’s perhaps quite good to be on the owner’s side of the table.

I don’t currently have a position in Nokia, but here’s an interesting piece of news:
US Cancels Chinese Company’s Ban - ZTE Granted One-Month License

Here is at least one concrete piece of evidence of ZTE’s difficulties impacting its international business; specifically, ZTE’s deal in Italy went to Ericsson:

The operating restrictions concerning the United States have also harmed ZTE’s business elsewhere in the world. It recently lost a contract in Italy because it cannot use American technology, according to sources from Bloomberg News Agency.
The 600 million euro contract went to Swedish Ericsson instead of ZTE, even though ZTE originally secured the contract two years ago. The contract was for Wind Tre’s base stations in Italy.

This Aspocomp and its circuit boards are new to me. I didn’t know there was such a company on the stock exchange that benefits from the arrival of 5G together with Nokia. I only noticed this in today’s morning review. Have people who have invested in Nokia also familiarized themselves with this and even invested in it? Aspocomp-päivitys - 5G-tulosajurin realisoituminen voi olla lähellä - Inderes

Nokia seems like an almost foolproof investment, given that 5G orders are expected to accumulate in the coming years. I am inclined to think that over a 2-3 year period, this will deliver excess returns compared to the main index, even when acquired at current levels (5 euros). I managed to make my purchases around four euros at the turn of the year, thanks largely to Mikael’s solid expertise.

I believe the 6-8e level speculated by Mikael will also be possible in 2020. I myself made a “Nexit” at the 5.3€ level, but if it temporarily crashed closer to 4.5€ due to a poor Q2, I’d jump back in.

Here are Mikael’s pre-comments and forecasts:
