InderesPodi and its future

I was thinking about inderespodi yesterday and its place in the Finnish podcast landscape.

I thought that a functional pod has the following:

  • Expertise and professionalism
  • Entertainment value (and I don’t just mean cracking jokes, but skillful and smooth performance, etc.)
  • Timeliness
  • Versatility & Topic Focus (The pod covers topics within its theme, stays on topic, is sufficiently informative, but doesn’t go too niche/into too much detail)
  • Continuity and a clear concept (e.g., pod episodes follow roughly the same concept, featuring the same hosts or performers)
  • Regularity (the pod is released at regular intervals or frequently enough)
  • Interesting guests
  • The right distribution media

Expertise and professionalism:
Inderespodi is generally very expert-led and the production is solid.

Entertainment value:
The pods vary significantly depending on the host, topic, and guest.

Timeliness:
This could be a bit more on the pulse. I suspect a certain kind of idea pipeline has been gathered for the pods, from which a topic is picked up when there’s time to record it. Sometimes a timely topic is pushed to the front of the pipeline (e.g., the banking crisis pod).

Versatility & Topic Focus:
Also varies a lot (host, topic, guest). Sometimes it goes into very detailed niches, sometimes into broad macro. Perhaps the subject areas vary more based on what is perceived as an interesting topic vs. what the listeners would want to hear about.

Continuity and a clear concept:
In my opinion, this is inderespodi’s biggest problem. It is not a clear concept, but rather a “general store” (sekatavarakauppa) of pods that manifests in a different form every time.

Regularity:
Reasonably okay, but varies, for example, during holiday seasons or due to other busy periods.

Interesting guests:
Could also be called a weakness. Guests don’t necessarily need to be utilized as much as in many other pods, as they want to leverage their own staff. Guests are usually used when they want to go deep into a narrow niche. This is a very different approach compared to other Finnish finance-themed podcasts.

The right distribution media:
YouTube and Spotify are a must. And the content should be found there immediately, not the next day. Inderes’s own pages personally only serve as a channel to notify that new content has been uploaded and that it can be listened to on Spotify. Inderes’s own app doesn’t work; it crashes. I would leave it behind entirely and put all content on Spotify (note: currently only selectively).

Inderespodi naturally has a good chance of being Finland’s best investment podcast. This option has yet to be fully utilized.

Thoughts on how to clarify things.

Categorize the pods again:
Inderes already has many pods, and in addition to them, this “dumping ground” for various topics.
Suggestion: in the future, Inderes would run several pod formats:
Heikkilä & Vilen
On the Trail of the Economy (Talouden jäljillä)
Antti Has Something to Say (Antilla on asiaa)
Marianne’s Macro (Mariannen makro)
Model Portfolio Review (Mallisalkkukatsaus)
as well as Inderespodi (and its many subcategories):
Sector Reviews (Sektorikatsaukset)
Olli’s Earnings Week Summary (Ollin tulosviikkosummaus)
Market Review (Markkinakatsaus) (Juha & Sauli)

I would move the recurring series currently under the pod into their own pods (like Heikkilä & Vilen or Talouden jäljillä).
Additionally, there are currently separate pods that would fit better into other pods. (e.g., [The China Thing: What do you need to know about the world’s factory? | inderesPodi 172] → Talouden jäljillä or Mariannen makro).

I would refine the remaining Inderespodi into Finland’s best pod, taking the above suggestions into account. I would make Verner the regular host or moderator (somewhat following the model of Pörssipäivä & Karon grilli, and even more the model of the Invest Like the Best with Patrick O’Shaughnessy podcast). Verner has become such a strong media professional over the years that he can get any topic and any guest into a good flow state.

This pod would then have more timeliness, more outside guests, more active dialogue, and a much more engaging approach. Get a pod recorded every week (excl. holiday seasons, and occasional off-weeks are allowed).

Then this pod, like all the other above pods / recurring themes, should be on Spotify and other selected distribution media. (Note: they can be utilized in all Inderes media: interviews, company info, etc.)

Edit. One more addition. Timely content is often interesting. Additionally, I want to highlight that even more important than that is timeless wisdom. Let’s not exclude it. For example:
inderesPodi 102: Bubble pod (Kuplapodi)
inderesPodi 92: Definition of appropriate equity weight (Sopivan osakepainon määritelmä)
inderesPodi episode 22: Capital allocation from a company perspective (Pääoman allokointi yrityksen näkökulmasta)
And of course, one of my biggest favorites:

Thanks for the podcast.
@Antti_Jarvenpaa I listened to the segment from 29:50-30:10 several times and didn’t quite fully understand.
Europe’s “economy size” was 70% compared to the USA and is now a third.
So, what do you mean by the size of the economy?

As I understand it, the gross domestic product of the European Union alone is 16.6 / 25.5, or 65% of the US GDP.

According to this, Europe’s GDP is 24.2 trillion vs. the USA’s 25.5 trillion, so almost the same.

What is being referred to by this size of the economy?

I shouldn’t rely on memory for numbers to avoid getting things wrong. Here are the ratios more accurately shown in a WSJ chart, specifically for the euro area.

Apologies for the slow response, but there were indeed many good points here, most of which we have already been contemplating this year, but the plan is to revisit these as a group early next year! We’ll get back to this, and thanks for the great comments in the meantime!

Interesting episode, but the mic picks up a runny nose quite unpleasantly.

I finally got around to listening to this circular economy podcast, which @Sijoittaja-alokas already linked in the previous message, and I have to publicly give praise for a truly inspiring podcast! I could have listened to several more hours on this topic, but this 45-minute episode was an excellent and compact package and sparked a lot of thoughts about my own consumption behavior. :star_struck: So thank you @Timo_Huhtamaki for joining our podcast as @Marianne_Palmu’s guest, and definitely come back again! :folded_hands:t2:

At the same time, I also have to praise the podcast where Esa Juntunen was a guest. @Juha_Kinnunen had built an excellent framework for the podcast, and it was really interesting to hear about Juntunen as an investor and Pokemon master. Yesterday, while looking at the statistics with @Ville_Kivinen at the office, we noticed that this particular podcast has already become the second most listened-to inderesPod of all time, and no wonder. So thank you also to @Omavaraisuushaaste for visiting the inderesPod! :raising_hands:t2:

This podcast has already been linked here, but let’s post it again since it’s been a while since its release.

By the way, what are the TOP 5 most listened-to podcast episodes? Just filling up the character count.

My wild guess is that Keskiväli’s and Mäkinen’s episodes are at least on that list.

Based on YouTube statistics, here are the most listened ones. Additionally, Spotify, Soundcloud, and the Inderes app bring in some more listens and might slightly change the order of these. I don’t actually know why a video from an investment fair also appears in this list with the search term ”inderespodi”, but you can still see the TOP 5 there.
