So, with your current employer? Because with some employers, R&D managers (at least experienced ones) could earn more.
If you want to move up with your current employer, I once noticed a surprisingly big difference just by subtly dressing more neatly. It sounds silly, but at least for us, it just led to being taken more seriously.
Otherwise, then:
- Speak less (if you tend to chatter, don’t; take notes and summarize, then speak aloud)
- Think about strategy, why decisions have been made, what competitors are doing, etc.
- Think of things as investments, learn business terminology (if you don’t already know it)
- Try to find someone at the level you want to be at who is willing to spar with you. Listen more than you speak, try to learn at what level of abstraction they think
- Etc.
