Inderes.fi product development updates #techtalk

The rules link in connection with flagging has apparently broken at some point.

if, for example, you take Miikka’s previous message, the url looks like this.

Glad to hear that you intend to advance this. For me, this feature is very critical, and I have used this feature elsewhere, such as in Helsingin Sanomat articles. In these, listening can be started by pressing a button. As a result, I end up listening to many more articles than I would read them.

When read by AI, the text doesn’t sound good as is, but with small changes, the quality can be surprisingly good. Practically, two corrections are needed: 1) replacing numbers, abbreviations, and frequently repeated foreign words with strings that sound correct, and 2) removing typos made by writers, especially those related to numbers. A better proofreading software could help with the latter problem. Examples of the first-mentioned automatic replacement:

  • 2026-27 → two thousand twenty-six dash twenty-seven
  • 6 %:iin → to six percent (single-digit numbers should, if I recall correctly, also be written out in Finnish)
  • aik. → earlier
  • MEUR → million euros
  • SAP’s meaning → gall’s meaning

Perhaps it would be possible to add a button to the comment and analysis pages that first removes extra tables from the view and improves the listening experience with the aforementioned automatic replacements before triggering the browser’s text-to-speech function.

I don’t read the Morning Review because it’s in PDF format. On the other hand, if I could listen to it, I would probably at least try listening to it. I watch the analyst’s comment and interview videos on YouTube because playlist management there is more usable than on Spotify, and I generally use the app quite a lot for other videos as well. However, Inderes videos are often quite long, and many new ones might be published before I have time to consume them. On the other hand, for some videos, I only watch snippets using timestamps. To be honest, I haven’t found a use for the Spotify distribution, even though I’ve known about it before, and on paper, it sounds like a good addition.

I added a Norwegian company to my watch list.

For some reason, however, the company does not appear in the company list on the front page.

Is it related to the fact that the Oslo Stock Exchange’s data isn’t connected to the rest of the world? In a Google Sheet, the Googlefinance function also doesn’t directly find data for Norwegian companies.

Thanks for the question @Thyme and apologies for the missing data!

We have indeed hidden companies from the watchlist if we don’t have stock data for them. This is why Medistim does not appear in the company list on the front page.

Regarding Oslo Stock Exchange stock data, it seems that several operators are having difficulties obtaining it  I myself was hoping for this data, and just a month ago we investigated adding data from an aggregator. Unfortunately, that was no longer possible, so now we are left with only more expensive routes. We will likely add Norwegian stock data to the service eventually, but it is not a high priority right now. The situation will change when there is more demand from client companies (or pressure from the community and Norwegian users  )

My Safari browser’s forum layout has gone a bit wonky since I updated iOS to version 26. The top bar goes half-hidden when I scroll down. And then writing a message is difficult; if I try to click a specific spot in the message, I have to click as much too low as what the cursor shows. The Firefox browser works significantly better than Safari.

Here’s a picture from Safari, and I don’t know if the fault is just on my end. I suspect the reason is the top bar going half-hidden, because when the top bar is fully visible, it works correctly.

Thanks Kimsku for the notification! I’ll send you a private message so we can look into it.

Automatic translation function. With another user’s guidance, I found the a*-icon; it seems translations were on.

Could a note be generated with the message stating that it has been translated?

The problem is that a message written in English, which appears correctly in the first image, looks like this, for example:

The program has apparently started translating the user’s image upload link into Finnish, with the result that the entire message breaks.
When the translation is removed from the a*-icon, the image also appears. Could something be done about this software problem?

This has been a problem on mobile Safari for a while now and hasn’t been fixed, which makes writing and especially editing on the phone almost impossible.

Bringing up the keyboard disconnects the text box from the touch interface, which causes finger presses to move the cursor to the wrong position in the text box rendered on the screen. The bottom edge of the text box remains hidden under the “Save Edit” element that appears over the keyboard, so the end of the message cannot be pressed with a finger.

Thanks for the questions @Vino_Pino! There’s a dedicated thread for multilingualism, but messages reach us here too

Currently, messages have that indicator at the top. In an optimal situation, this works so smoothly that there’s no need to emphasize it in the text, for example, but we accept the feedback and will consider the matter.

Yes, the problem there was that the translation had broken off. I had that particular message translated again, and it now works normally. The breaking of translations is likely due to a token limit in the Discourse forum platform, which they have now fixed in the new version. We are still waiting for the stable next version, and hopefully, that will resolve the random breaking of translations and similar issues :crossed_fingers:

Yes, this is a Safari + Discourse issue. It’s difficult for us to fix this directly, but I will lobby Discourse about it. Sorry for the poor user experience!

Hi. For some reason, Inderes started sending emails for every page load

This started a while ago when I tried to activate Premium through Nordnet. Originally, clicking the activation link on inderes.fi led to an eternal loop between Inderes and Nordnet, but I think Premium is activated now? At least I saw analyses that said “for Premium subscribers only,” but I haven’t checked if the subscription status is visible somewhere.

But, if this Welcome email could be fixed, that would be nice

When accessing the forum without logging in, the English translation version always opens first. Is this intended, or a feature that appeared unnoticed? Perhaps the default should rather be the local language.

Hi @jaaa, okay, this sounds like a strange loop :grimacing: And sorry for the spam! We’ll investigate this and fix it asap.

And I checked that your Premium is activated correctly. It also shows up at the top of your profile page.

Thanks for the message @terva_xyz! Yes, this is a known bug regarding the desired functionality. The translator checks the language from the browser, but from the inderes.fi site, it should force the Finnish version. Yesterday’s Discourse update fixed this bug; now we just need to make the correction and release it.

After that, we still need to consider whether to keep the browser’s language preference on. It facilitates content consumption for a wider audience, but it might cause confusion if you open a link, for example, with WhatsApp’s in-app browser, where you haven’t logged into the forum.
