Salvelinus:
Last night on A-studio, there was a segment about electricity, and it bugs me that people are dwelling a bit too much on these few days and the cold weather when prices were really high or consumption was close to exceeding production capacity. Overall, we’ve managed well, and the situation is improving all the time. Out of curiosity, I went for a drive during the cold spell when Fingrid warned of a possible power shortage; there wasn’t much sign of saving, at least regarding street lighting, outdoor lighting, etc., neither in residential areas nor in industrial estates. Of course, the consumption showed that at least spot-price electricity customers cut their usage to a minimum. It should be possible to intervene in that power shortage situation at a national level, at least so that when the critical limit is approached, a notification is given on TV and possibly via text message about the emergency, like the test notification that has often scrolled at the top of the TV screen. A potential power shortage affects everyone, whether they have a fixed or spot-price contract; consumers must also accept temporary flexibility instead of always just blaming the government or power companies. Balancing power and transmission networks are needed more, that’s clear, and more is coming. It’s just a situation where people were conditioned in past years to expect cheap electricity that’s always available on a silver platter. The war started by our eastern neighbor shuffled the deck, but within a few years, we can tell Putin regarding energy to “keep his jack” (pidä tunkkis) if he happens to still be alive; that’s the best part of all this.
Strange that the text above has been lingering here for over a week, but when I tried to comment on it, it was removed within 10 minutes as “off-topic.”
Well, I went and wrote my response to it here Sähkömarkkinat Suomessa ja maailmalla - #15 käyttäjältä faravid - Talous & markkinat - Inderes forum
