Bittium signs an agreement for software maintenance of the Estonian Defence Forces’ tactical communications system

Bittium Corporation press release June 8, 2026 at 3:45 p.m.

Bittium continues to support the Estonian Defence Forces’ tactical communications system by providing software maintenance services as part of its lifecycle services. The services are delivered in accordance with a framework agreement between Bittium’s Estonian partner, acting as the system integrator, and the Estonian Defence Forces, covering the period 2026–2030. This continues the long-term cooperation in developing and maintaining the modern tactical communications capabilities of the Estonian Land Forces. The value of the software maintenance deliveries is approximately EUR 3.3 million.

Bittium has previously delivered a tactical communications system to the Estonian Defence Forces based on the Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network™ (TAC WIN) system and Bittium Tough VoIP™ products. The system provides mobile troops with secure and high-performance broadband connections, enabling reliable voice and data traffic to support situational awareness across the battlefield. It improves operational efficiency by ensuring reliable communications in demanding and dynamic conditions.

In modern communications systems, software plays a central role. Through software maintenance, Bittium ensures that the system remains up-to-date with changing operational requirements and new threats. Regular updates and performance development enable the Estonian Defence Forces to maintain their operational readiness and maximize the value of the system’s lifecycle. The services are part of Bittium’s broader lifecycle service offering, which covers support and maintenance for both hardware and software throughout their entire lifespan.

“Our long-term cooperation with the Estonian Defence Forces demonstrates the importance of continuously developing tactical communications capabilities together with the customer,” says Tommi Kangas, Senior Vice President of Bittium’s Defence & Security business segment. “Software maintenance plays a key role in ensuring that systems evolve in line with operational requirements and remain secure, reliable, and mission-ready throughout their lifecycle.”

Good progress in the Bittium / MarshallAI front.
Below is the beginning of the press release.

Bittium and MarshallAI are transforming tactical radios into AI-assisted electronic warfare sensors through software. Every radio already deployed in the field is now a potential intelligence resource.

Bittium has utilized AI in tactical communications for years. The strategic partnership established last year with Finnish AI expert MarshallAI takes the use of AI a decisive step forward: every radio in the field becomes an intelligent sensor that detects, analyzes, and monitors the electromagnetic operational environment in real time.

Through a software update, Bittium’s tactical radios are turned into ISTAR-capable (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance) electronic warfare sensors.

“Bittium today launched the Bittium Tough SDR Unmanned™ radio module, a radio solution designed for unmanned systems that integrates unmanned ground, air, and sea systems directly into a jam-resistant tactical communication network. For the first time, drones, unmanned vehicles, and other autonomous platforms can operate not only as remote-controlled tools but also as active network nodes within the same battlefield IP network used by soldiers and commanders.”

Now there’s gear available to be bolted onto the side of a drone.

This post is pure speculation and is based solely on rumors and guesswork.

Lauri Nurmi from Iltalehti wrote yesterday, citing his sources, that so-called “loyal wingman” drone swarms are being considered for procurement alongside the F-35 fleet.

As is well known, the F-35 aircraft are supplied by a company called Lockheed Martin, and according to Nurmi’s article, discussions regarding the drone swarms have specifically been opened with LM.

Bittium is involved in indirect industrial cooperation related to the fighter jet deals with Lockheed Martin, and has itself announced that it started two indirect industrial cooperation projects with LM in 2024 (CEO’s review for the Annual General Meeting on May 7, 2025).

Today, Bittium announced that it has expanded its Tough SDR product line to drones and other unmanned vehicles.

I am not claiming that today’s announcement has a connection to Lockheed Martin or recent news coverage, but one might hastily think so. In any case, I believe this product launch has significant commercial potential.

Undoubtedly, drones will be deployed and they will certainly generate and receive data in cooperation with fighter jets. However, no drone will be flying around a fighter jet. It—the fighter—cannot even stay airborne at the speeds of any drone. A swarm of drones in one place and the fighter in another. But not around it.

Here is a Wikipedia article on the ‘loyal wingman’ concept.

Apparently, it is a quite ‘standard’ concept for the future.

Here are Juha’s comments regarding these recent announcements

Bittium published two announcements on Tuesday, both of which expand the company’s tactical communications product portfolio: the Bittium Tough SDR Unmanned radio module designed for unmanned systems and a software update that transforms the company’s tactical radios into AI-assisted electronic warfare sensors. We consider both releases to be logical and strategically important expansions that strengthen Bittium’s competitiveness in the ongoing modernization wave of European defense forces. Since both cases involve expanding the product portfolio rather than new orders, the releases do not cause immediate changes to our forecasts for the coming years.
